Hi guys i am about to make a golden style ale not a clone of anything in particular
i have two tins of morgans dark malt and two of light malt and 2 kilos of dex im trying to take the guesswork
out of what goes into the kits by just using lme and doing my own hopping.
This is what im thinking of doing in my 6 litre pot
30 grams amarillo for 60
30 grams amarillo for 30
30 grams amarillo for 5
dry hop 45grams of columbus and 45 grams of d sazz
total 53 litres
How do you think this will work out bitterwise and taste?
i was thinking of changing the sazz for nelson
Any help would be much appreciated.

Download a copy of beersmith -
Linky
Its free for 21 days but i highly recommend buying it. Excellent piece of brewing software.
Plug those numbers in and you can work out bitterness, OG and predicted FG.
Doing a small boil can be a tad tricky but a few others have done it and no doubt will be able to help you fudge the numbers. As long as you keep the gravity in the 6L pot the same as you would for a full boil then bittering etc is easier to predict altho you will have a lower utilisation due to the smaller boil volume.

Thanks am downloading it now ill try to figure it out
i might use my 20 litre pot and do a 3rd volume boil to make it abit easier

With a 20L pot you do easily boil 1/2 the batch and then add the other half of the fermentables at flameout and top up with water.
beersmith will help you calculate all this
As for the recipe, i'd be adding some sort of steeped crystal grain to add a bit more oomph to it. But then you would be heading down the path of mini-mash and partials and thats a slippery slope!

I had a fiddle with beersmith and this is what i came up with
18 litre boil
Amount Item Type % or IBU
4.01 kg Pale Liquid Extract (8.0 SRM) Extract 45.24 %
3.00 kg Dark Liquid Extract (17.5 SRM) Extract 33.87 %
45.00 gm Columbus (Tomahawk) [14.00 %] (60 min) Hops 9.6 IBU
45.00 gm Amarillo Gold [8.50 %] (60 min) Hops 5.8 IBU
45.00 gm nelson [12.60 %] (Dry Hop 3 days) Hops -
45.00 gm Amarillo Gold [8.50 %] (25 min) Hops 4.1 IBU
45.00 gm Columbus (Tomahawk) [14.00 %] (25 min) Hops 6.7 IBU
30 ml Amylase Enzyme
2.00 kg Dextrose (1.0 SRM) Sugar 20.89 %
Then top up to 54 litres
Est Original Gravity: 1.052 SG
Est Final Gravity: 1.014 SG Estimated Alcohol by Vol: 5.01 %
Bitterness: 26.2 IBU
Cross my fingers and hope it works out ok! might do it tonight unless anyone has any better sugestions

I do 7l Boil extract beers all the time... here's my standard approach.
1kg LDME
1.5kg Malt Extract (Coopers Unhoped extract) or 1 tin of Morgans and another 500gms of LDME
Here is my Golden Ale recipe:
1.00 kg Light Dry Extract (8.0 SRM) Dry Extract 35.71 %
1.50 kg Liquid Malt Extract (8.0 SRM) Extract 53.57 %
0.30 kg Caramel/Crystal Malt - 40L (40.0 SRM) Grain 10.71 %
15.00 gm Amarillo Gold [8.50 %] (60 min) Hops 22.6 IBU
20.00 gm Amarillo Gold [8.50 %] (20 min) Hops 18.2 IBU
30.00 gm Amarillo Gold [8.50 %] (0 min) (Aroma Hop-Steep) Hops -
In beersmith mark the Liquid Malt Extract as "Add After Boil", it will work out your hop utilisation better that way.
Steep Crystal for 30mins and strain into pot, sparge if you like. Then boil with the LDME in in 7l water and add hops as indicated.
Cool wort after boil as much as possible with an ice bath in the sink, then into the fermentor with the can of Liquid Malt extract (and/or extra LDME) and stir well..
Then pitch yeast.

Something not right about that recipe Brewaholic
45g of Amarillo boiled for 60 mins = 5.8 IBU
45g of Amarillo boiled for 25 mins = 4.1 IBU
A setting is out of whack and I'm not sure where.
You need to tell beersmith that you are adding only some of the fermentables to the boil. To do this click on the malt and there will be a check box 'add after boil'.
