Who Lives Near Ballarat?
I may be moving to Ballarat soon and was curious if anyone here lives near there? How far is G&G from there? Is there a good LHBS near there? Any decent microbreweries/brewpubs? Of course I hear it is always cold there, so the best question of all... how many months of the year can I brew lagers on a heat belt?

Re: Who Lives Near Ballarat?
Yeah I knew Rysa was from there, but I think he is out of the game... Maybe I can re-spark his interest when I get there?

Re: Who Lives Near Ballarat?
Just looked at some of the pics from the facebook group - you know you are from Ballarat when.... and there are several pics of it snowing. Moving from Bundy to Ballarat is going to be brutal Kev, i told you its the coldest place in Oz!
Re: Who Lives Near Ballarat?
Hopefully it will all be worth it Doc! Who knows, I may even learn something

Re: Who Lives Near Ballarat?
i did notice they had Old Speckled Hen on tap at the Bended Elbow (which has its own beer?). Thats a bloody nice ale that.
Re: Who Lives Near Ballarat?
Good name, English Real Ale is it? Bended Elbow is in Ballarat?
Re: Who Lives Near Ballarat?
Old Speckled Hen
The Bended Elbow in Ballarat
I can get Old Speckled Hen from Dan Murphys, a tad pricey but too nice a drop to look at the price tag.

Re: Who Lives Near Ballarat?

last "saw" Rysa over on Brodies castle a month ago so he may still be active.
G&G would be 1+ hours down the highway depending on traffic.
the Ballarat Home Brew Centre is the local supply shop.
speak to the owners Roger and Averil ( really helpful) web site ballarathomebrew.com.au phone 03 5333 5825
address 1-314 Ripon St South, Ballarat.
so come, enjoy.....bring a jumper! or 2.

BEER! Much more than just a four letter word.
Re: Who Lives Near Ballarat?
Are you going to enrol in the Brewing course at the University Of Ballarat? They have had some world beer tasting events in Ballarat too, Im 200kms from there but the Ballarat home brew shop is my local, Ballarat used to have 60 pubs a pub for every 1000 residents one of the jhighest ratios in Australia also plenty of quaint pubs in the district thanks to the thirst of gold miners!
My favorite pub in Ballarat used to be the North Star in the 70s 80s

Thanks guys, I lived in Naracoorte for over 2 years and never got over there. I am not doing the brewing course Goatsby, I am doing the Food Science course to start with. Hopefully I will be doing the brewing course next year if it fits into my uni schedule (I think I can take some of the brewing course as electives for the Food Sci course?)

Naracoorte is one of my favourite places, although I've never lived there. Brian and his peeps have done a wonderful job with the bat interpretation thing and getting the world heritage thing happening.
Ignore the rest of the place if you absolutely must, but if you're in the area you would be silly not to visit the caves...
Oh... and... umm... beer... is good...

Still pop in from time to time but rarely these days. Other issues which added to me drifting away from brewing TEMPORARILY i might add.
Still got quite a bit in stocks of unmade beer.
Ballarat...... the wind chill factor is the cold part, if the wind doesn't blow in winter it's bareable.
Charger pretty much covered all other aspects of it with our local.

Re: Who Lives Near Ballarat?
Why the big move Kev?
You could have moved to "Gods country", Newcastle....actually, Lake Macquarie to be exact. Massive lake, great beaches everywhere, Caves Beach, Hams Beach, 9 mile beach, Redhead beach and apparently the largest Saltwater lake in oz.....apparently. Did I mention the lake is big
Great fishing, winter does not get too cold, summer is close to Qld and we also have a Uni here you could have gone to.
Edit...just edited my location to Lake Macquarie, great place to visit guys
....and bring some brew with you
Cheers
Boonie

A homebrew is like a fart, only the brewer thinks it's great.
