Lager with XXXX Gold or Carlton mid "aftertaste"

My wife loves these two beers and wants me to try to make a clone that has the same aftertaste which I am assuming is due to dry hopping. I guess the real question is, what hops is it? I can not find a recipe for either forex or carlton midstrength anywhere :( If anyone has a full recipe that would be even greater help to me!

Cheers

You're after Pride of Ringwood (POR) hops. Most mass produced Australian beers rely on it for bittering, flavour and aroma. Apparently, Carlton have their own special varieties of POR they use for Carlton Draught, not sure about Mid though. You could always go to the maufacture's website(s) look for the 'contact us' buttons and send them an email asking what the general compositions of the beers are.

If you want a basic recipe guideline I reckon you could use either a Coopers draught or lager kit (or maybe even a Homebrand kit) and do a 5 minute hop steep + a dry hop and use a lager yeast to ferment it. For an Australian style beer you probably wouldn't go all malt so a bag of Coopers Brew Enhancer 2 (BE2) or 500g of light dried malt extract + 250g-500g of dex would be in order, If you're looking for lower alcohol beer like mid use only 500g-750g of extra fermentables.

My plan was almost exactly as you suggested.

I assumed it would be POR hops.

Was going to do the following recipe:

1 Coopers Lager
1 Coopers Draught
12 grams POR boiled 10 min
12 grams POR dry hopped when racked

I already have a trub to pitch it on ;)

Will let you all know how it turns out!

Ahh a toucan brew. That should turn out well and give you a good hoppy Aussie tasting beer.

My experience so far with POR hops is go to lightly.

I (naively) dry hopped at racking with 25g of POR pellets to a Thomas Coopers Traditional Draught with 1.5kg LME done with W34/70 lager yeast. It created far too much POR taste IMO and was too heavy for that style of beer
A similar brew with only 4g POR dry hopped still seemed a bit much

The following schedule
4g @30 mins
4g@15 mins
4g @2 mins
with POR pellets into a Coopers Aust Pale Ale with 1kg LDME and US56 ale yeast gave a better result in terms of POR flavour but I will still tone it back a bit next time.
My best result so far with POR was a 70 min boil using fresh flowers.

I used 25g in a 2kg BE2 draught, came out fantasic at around 7%.

Time will heal bitterness and grassiness

hrm, I have an extract aussie lager (all PoR) in the fermenter at the moment...

*wanders off to chuck 10g of PoR in*

I'll keg it soon & let you know

edit: only had 14g left so I chucked it all in - twas tasting bland so it needed it I reckon.

OK, I actually dry hopped into "secondary" (aka Keg) and force carbed so with only two days on it it's pretty good - have to let it clear & age (yes I know I shouldn't have force carbed yet to lager it) for a couple of weeks & see how it is but thus far it looks alright - more like carlton mid than gold IMO - definately has the PoR aftertaste zing.

ahh, one thing I forgot to mention - it has more body than either gold or mid so perhaps substitute some dextrose for malt if that worries you (doesn't worry me  ).

Doesn't worry me one bit...in fact I welcome it...but will have to wait to see what the wife thinks ;)

I have found to make a beer similar to carlton mid u are best using the morgan's 3.5 kit and use 2 packets of pride
of ringwood hops. morgan's also sell a kit that is called queenslander gold which is in the style of xxxx gold.
