How Many Hydrometers???

Post by Trizza »

I just broke my second hydrometer, and since I've done only 16 brews its becoming apparent that I might be going through them a bit too quickly.

Maybe I'm a bit careless, I just wanted to know how many hydrometers do people go through, or how do you stop them from breaking?

They're literally the only breakable item that I use during brewing, cant imagine life with anything else made of glass...

Trizza,

I made a stand out of wood that holds the container and the hydrometer, after breaking one. All it is, is two pieces of wood spaced apart about 60 mm with timber and the top piece drilled out with holes large enough for the filling tube to pass through. I have three holes one for a spare hydro and use the other two one for the filler tube and the other for the hydro. Since using this for the past 12 months I have not broken one, as it can't roll off the bench which is what happened last one. :D

Yeah, it's a shame they don't bounce. I'm on my third or fourth after 22 brews.

I wonder if a plastic one would work. I don't see why not.

I broke four in one week, prior to that I'd never broken one

My refractometer was one of my best investments

A hydrometer wastes too much beer

Just a couple of drops and that's all you need

They are an absolute must if going AG
