Current Gravity After 5 days is 1042!

Post by l'orange »

This is just out of curiosity, as i just did a hydro reading for my current two beers, after they have been in the fermenters with yeast for 5 days now. My munich Helles gravity has dropped to 1027, which seems pretty normal :D , but...

my Rice Pilsner gravity is at 1042!

Does that seem normal to everyone when brewing at lager temperatures (9-11*C) as this is my first attempt at a lager. Could this be caused by the fridge being a little too cold?

Or does brewing lager take longer than ales and if so how long should i expect?

Oh and the recipe was
3kg ESB pilsner
500 grams rice malt
250grams carapils
saaz hops, filled to 22.5L and using W34/70

Cheers

9c is pretty low for primary fermentation init?

I woulda thought ~14-15c then 9-11c after racking?

1042 is fine & your temp is fine also - your lager will typically take 10 to 14 days to drop below 1020 - Once it drops below 1020, let the temp rise under it's own steam to 18c, leave it there for a couple of days & then chill right down to approx 4c until you are ready to keg or bottle...
