Best Selection of Beers In Brisbane

Been to a good pub, or bad, lately? Found a bar with a great selection of beer? Looking for a new local or somewhere to visit on holidays?

Enjoyed a few brews in the Platform tonight. There was a Red Angus rep in there who gave us a sample of their Pilsner. Not really that impressed. It was hoppy but the combination of hops in there forced out the Saaz flavour. I don't know if it's just me but I like my pilsners to taste like saaz hops.

As far as the bottle selection, they just got in the latest James Squire Hop Thief and Cascade First Harvest. The JSHT was great, first time I've had it but it was very enjoyable. Does anyone know what hops were used? I thought I tasted amarillo but it wouldn't be the first time I've been wrong.

As for the First Harvest, it wasn't too bad but I wouldn't rave about. Tasted like a slightly more hoppy version of their normal lager. I am somewhat biased against cascade though, it was my staple before I could buy beer myself so once I hit 18 I'd had enough Cascade beer to last me a lifetime.

They now have dogbolter and wicked elf pale on tap.

Also in the bottle give the Mac's Hop Rocker a go and the Sam Adams. 2 very tasty drops.

I'd love to see the SC Dunkel back on tap. I only had a chance to enjoy one glass before and it was very tasty.

I was at the Platform last week & they had just run out of Wicked Elf Pale. A short blonde tried to sell me a Fat Yak instead. I told her I could get that anywhere on Queen Street, and that this bar is supposed to be different. Ended up having a Dogbolter, which was the only beer they had on tap I couldn't get elsewhere. I guess it was bad timing on my part as far as their selection.

That said, I do hope to get some more of the SC Dunkel when its up.

On a side note.. whats up with the Union Jack on Charlotte Street? The building looks cool, as does some of the decor, but its mis-leading to think its a UK "alehouse". It has Guinness and Kilkenny, which is about as 'ale-ish as it gets. Rather ordinary and disappointing. That place would be a great locale for a Melbourne-style 'Local Taphouse with Aussie craft brews and real imported ales on tap.

UJ's appeals more to newly 18 year olds interested in getting as drunk as possible, regardless of what the beer is.

Ha, you beat me to it. Was just in there last night and had a few glasses. I'm becoming very fond of that beer.

I'd check to see if they bottle the stuff but the website is under construction :(

Will, the SCB website has been under construction for ages, this Dunkel won a medal at the Australian beer awards......but you can't even find out where to buy it!!!

Must be a hobby not a business......man I wish I could find a business partner that had pockets that deep...........

The Hefe is OK, good for a change but I'm not the biggest Hefe fan, like a Dunkel though.

Agreed, I much prefer the Dunkel.

It was nice to get some Hop Thief on tap, before I found out about the Platform Bar I could never find anywhere that would get the limited release Squires on tap.

I may be stopping in for a beer or two tonight around 5 on my way home from work. Car was buggered so I took the train to work. I think I'll have time to down a couple before going to meet the wife at South Bank station.
