I would say Glass is better. I have never used plastic, but a mate of mine does and after nearly a year his beer is flat and not tasting the best. Before this dissapointment, I had heard that the plastic does leach out the CO2 after time and my mates beer proved it enough for me.

I have used glass for years and have only had one or two bottles crack under pressure (be that capping or over priming). You just need to make sure your brew is finished fermenting and you put in a reasonable amount of priming sugar and glass is no problem. Brown is also better due to the blocking of harmful light, or just keep them in the dark.

I use glass. It's the best. Having said that, you can get special PET bottles for brewing beer; Coopers make them, and I heard that they're coated in something that slows down the gas transfer, and would thus make your beer last longer. They're also brown.

Standard PET softdrink bottles are OK for a few months though.

So Coopers say. Unfortunatly my mate only uses the Coopers brown PET bottles. I guess he will just have to drink them sooner. I for one like to keep mine for a while to mature etc... Plus with about 120L worth of bottles it can take some time to get through it all.

Hey sorry guys but i concur. Plastic fantastic all the way. Your beers wont go flat do coke bottles?
Advantages are: 1 no breakages
2 no explosions
3 less space taken up
4 easier to cap.
5 easier to clean
6 can tell if beer is carbonated or over carbonated
7 if overcarbonated, easy to let excess gas out
8 No need to purchase caps just reuse

Any other reasons to use plastic? Dont get me wrong there is something about glass but that is the only advantage compared with at least 8 reasons to use pet . Your beer is brewed in plastic may as well bottle in it.

Your mate is doing something wrong, i use coopers P.E.T for all my brews now and have never been dissapointed, some of my brews have been in them for 2 years even though they only recommend 18 months and they are still fine, your mates problem isnt the bottles its either his brewing technique or he isnt putting the caps on tight enough

Lethal will tell you plastic , which I admit are pretty easy, but Crown seals are just as easy for me .

I use an old custom made bottle capper that resembles an superautomatica,but it is all steel.It has bottled well over 2800 bottles for me,and i have only broken 3 bottles so far.The old longneck ,twist top coopers stout bottles and west end draught bottles are the only bottles this thing won't cap properly.And the best thing is ,i got it for free from my stepfather.
