hi guys
I put my first brew down 4 days ago (coopers kit) and it has been bubbling away nicely until now.
now it only bubbles every so often, yesterday it was roughly bubbling every 2 seconds.
Is this normal?
I have my temp at 21 degree's if that helps.
cheers
luke
newbie question( bubbling)
Re: newbie question( bubbling)
Yeah, sounds good to me mate. My brews usually bubble nicely for 3-5 days then slow down to bubbles every minute or even less after that. I tend to leave it for 2 weeks and take my hydrometer readings at that point to confirm it's done.
Re: newbie question( bubbling)
another newbie question here as well, hope you dont mind me asking on your thread
firstly great forum, plenty to learn here, thanks to all contributors
ok, my first batch was a brewcraft dutch lager, 250g maltodextrine, 250g dextrose, and 500g pale malt, total 23 litres
mixed and yeast pitched 12pm on 8/1/09 at 28 degrees
first bubbled 8 hours later at 8pm on 8/1/09 temp had dropped to 26 degrees
next morning at 8am 9/1/09 it was bubbling vigorously (every 10-15secs) and temp had dropped to 23 degrees
at 8pm 9/1/09 it stopped bubbling and temp was 22 degrees
the foam that had formed on the top of the brew is slowly disapating, and it has been sitting at a constant 22 degrees for the last 2 days
i am quite sure there are no leaks, and the water level in my air lock is only just starting to level
is only 24 hours of bubbling normal ? is this maybe because it was too hot when pitching ?
thanks for any replies

Re: newbie question( bubbling)
At the temperatures you mention, your yeast will chew through the batch pretty quickly.
The dropping temperatures will lead to a drop off of activity while the yeast acclimatises. They don't like big changes in temperatures.
I'd leave it for another 2 or 3 days, and then take a hydrometer reading to see where you are at. I'd be surprised if it wasn't done at that stage.
However, I recommend you leave it for a total of 10 to 14 days before bottling. It allows your beer to clear up fermentation side products, and to drop clear to a degree.

warra48, thanks for your reply
i just drew a sample from the tap, sanitised the tap before and after doing so,
threw out a cup and then took a hydrometer reading, it read 1010
i didnt take a start reading, but the kit tells me i should be aiming for 1005
good news though, it tasted like beer, even though it was sweet
10-14 days, mate, your talking to someone who's brewing their first brew, i cant wait that long !!!!
its my birthday in exactly 4 weeks time, and i want to be serving my own brew !!!!
ok, i'll exercise some patience,
thanks for your reply
