Need some guidence with my 1st extract

Post by Wags »

Hi, im trying to piece together my first extract, a NS ale, so i purchased beersmith to help me out but im not sure if i've got it right. At the moment Beersmith thinks im boiling the hops in all the malt, which i dont want?? :? I was planning a 10ltr boil in a 15ltr pot. Heres my recipe so far,

3kg ldme
200gm grain steeped (carapils and or carahell, not sure yet)
20gm NS @ 45min
20gm NS @ 15min
20gm NS @ 5min
US-05
23ltrs

So far i end up with 35.4 IBUs. How do i change the boil schedule as far as the malt goes?

Can anyone help, check that im on the right track.

Cheers, Brent.

thats fine, as long as your boil is similar gravity.

So say its a 23l batch, you boil about 10l thats about 1/3 (ish). So put about 1/3 of the malt in, 1kg + the runnings you've steeped off the grain.

For me it works out to be about 600gms of malt in my 7l boil.

Then put the rest of the malt in at the end, bring back to boil just so it mixes through then your done. Sit it in the sink with ice and cold water for about 30mins then into the fermentor.

Looks tasty to me!

Once you've done all extract brews you wont look back.. in fact if you've got any spare time in your weekend (I dont) you'll be asking about all grain mashing soon :D

I really cant see me going AG, it would cost too much to get set up, and i barely have time to do kits atm. A keg set up is next on the list anyways

Would i still expect 35 IBUs only boiling that amont of malt with the hops. Im thinking it would be higher. Maybe i worry too much....

Aim to boil the same gravity as beersmith predicts for the full volume.

so if you are meant to boil 3kg od LDME in 20L but only want to boil 4L you use 1/5th the amount of LDME (ie 600g).
