Bottling - Clear Bottles and Twist Tops

Post by jon117 »

Yo,

With bottling I've been told by a friend;

a) Not to use twist tops

b) Not to use clear bottles

Just wondering if anyone could tell me whether this is true from experience and if so why. I have a thousand TED bottles I'd been saving up to use and was devastated when I was told this news.

Cheers

a) rubbish. Use them. They work very well.

b) Clear bottles let UV rays in causing bad flavours in the beer. In spite of this, they can be used if you can keep them out of sunlight, bear in mind that even small exposure can affect the beer.

I use clear bottles for a) brews that won't last long i.e thirst quenchers or i use a few in each batch so I can see the colour of the beer.

i dont have any problem with twist tops they work fine, probably not as durable as crown seals tho.
as for the clear bottles, they say dont use them because you need to protect the beer from the light and the brown bottles do that but providing you were storing them in a dark place i dont see a problem with it.

I happily do several things that I have been told won't work. After a while you will get a feel for what is gospel truth and what is quite clearly wrong, but most importantly what works for you.

I use a lot of 1.25litre PET soft drink bottles. I store them in my light-proof beer store. My beer is well-received by all who try it.

Cheers for that.

Trying to cut through urban myth versus fact is the hardest thing I'm finding in trying to set down the first batch.

Thanks for all the help.

I have allways used both. Twist offs-you have to push a little harder for a good seal. Clear bottles- cover em up with an old shirt and keep them in the dark

Jon,

Even if there was any truth in the matter (there is, but if you don't leave in the sunlight for a long period you'll be fine) - the damage done to even a below par homebrew will pale in comparison to the horrible effects of drinking TEDs.. My goodness!!

Its good to have you on board... to each their own on beer taste. But I may suggest that if you want to recreate a TED you pee into a bottle and add about 10ml of meth? haha.

No more stupid than the person who invented TEDs. Who is like Darth Vader. The evil Emporer being the person who made TED Platinum. My goodness, that is like Pee & Methylated Spirits & 20ml of Motor Oil all packed with something that looks like a rejected ACDC album.

All I can taste is chemicals when I drink this (forced to...). As for Platinum - that shouldnt have got past some authority responsible for peoples welfares...

If I could vote in Australia, I would back any party that planned to ban these commercial concoctions. Perhaps a beer lovers political party should? Anyone want the leadership? I would solve the water crisis by putting beer through all the taps... on second thought - I would never get out of the shower... it would chill people out a little though.....

My oh my... it must be a friday, I am going batty and can't stop thinking about beer.
