Southern fires??

Post by silkworm »

Just wondering how you guys in the southern states are fairing with the heat and the fires?
I hope we don't see any more deaths.
The 2003 fires got way too close for us here - 100m from the house on 4 sides.
I hope you fair well.....

Well its smoky in horsham even though the Grampians fire is 50kms away.

Im just staying right away, leave the firefighting for the experts Im not going to get in their way. Its a shame about the fire as the Grampians are a beautiful spot been fishing camping and bushwallking there plenty of times. Also the stock losses are bad.

I'm down in Rowville in South East Vic and can't see any smoke here, but when we had the big bush fires up in Mount Dandenong about 6 years ago the haze was rediculous. Can't imagine what it is like up near the Grampians.

I know exactly how you feel goat...that was the same when we had the January fires in canberra....2pm was like 2am...so dark & couldnt breathe!...plus me being a Volunteer fire fighter in the thick of it all didnt help with the breathing & the seeing!

They have been know to be.
Praying for rain.

I live right on the western lip of the Latrobe Valley, where the lowest entry point to the valley is. When the wind swings around to the east, the smoke from the Erica fires is funnelled right through where we live. We had to take the batteries out of the smoke alarms at the weekend because the smoke from the fire control lines was so thick inside the house it was setting them off. I can stand at the top of the driveway and see the fire front about 15km away. All we can do is close up the house and run the air con to keep the smoke out, more so for the baby's sake.

Not looking forward to tomorrow's high temps and winds. We haven't had any ash fall yet, unlike the Tolmie fires last year where everything was covered in ash.

Thank god the rains come. Looks like it has calmed the situation down a lot. Lets hope thats all the fires we have for this summer, and for the next summers to come.
