Bit of help with Hop choice please :)
Hello people,
Ok i have put down 4 brews to date, and all have turned out really well.
The next beer i am planning will be my first with adding extra hops. So far i have stuck to using Light Dry Malt Extract in place of the dextrose etc.
Generally just putting kilo of LDME with a Saflager or Safale yeast, and a kit, so have played a little with different yeasts.
Now i want to add some hops, just to experiment a little, and see what all this talk about hops is really about.
Ok i have a Wander Munich Lager Kit, a kilo of LDME i also have some dextrose and multidextrin if needed.
I have a sachet of muntons gold Ale yeast which i plan to use.So it won't be a Lager technically, although i suggest the kit yeast is an ale yeast anyway.
I am yet to do any type of boil, so am not looking for bittering hops, just for aroma, and a bit of extra flavour. Sticking to the german theme i was thinking about using either Hallertau, Tettnanger, or Saaz.
I am thinking of boiling for 15 minutes then adding to the fermenter?
So what would you use, and how would you go about adding them?
Cheers
Maimu.

I agree with Chris go the Hallertau stepped. You can get the hops as brewiser finishing hops these come in a tea bag with 12g of hops. Or you can get hop pallets loose I'd use 20g. If you get the loose pallets step in boiled water out of the kettle as Chris described then pour the liquid into the fermenter straining off the spent pallets. Or put the hops pallets in a cut up stocking an use like the tea bag.

Hop choice
Whats wrong with pride of ringwood hops for bittering, they have a high alpha acid content and smell good when crushed. The only thing is you can't get the flowers anymore ,just the pellets.

Re: Hop choice
Unless you live in Tassie where it is grown. I have been in touch with one of the farms down here and they are happy for me to go and dig a few plants for myself.wiggins wrote:Whats wrong with pride of ringwood hops for bittering, they have a high alpha acid content and smell good when crushed. The only thing is you can't get the flowers anymore ,just the pellets.

There is no such thing as bad beer. There is only good beer and better beer.

Maimu,
Any of the hops that you suggested would be good in any lager, Saaz generally used for pilsners, and I often use Hallertau but have had excellent results with tettenager. Stick with one of those you suggested and you won't be disappointed.
Other suggestions, such as amerillo and fuggles are used in ales, and Pride of ring wood in any australian type beer.
Depends what you are looking for in the type of beer you're making.
You are on the right track, happy brewing
Cheers

There's nothing wrong with having nothing to say - unless you insist on saying it. (Anonymous)

You could try a James Squire Amber Ale clone with the WillametteBig Al wrote:Hi, I have some Willamette hop pellets, what kit does any one recomend with these lager, bitter etc. I was going to try coopers draught. Also is general rule for hop pellets 20g and tea bags 12g? I have only just started using hops and have mostly steeped.

Also nice to combine 2 different hops and choose one for bittering and the other for aroma.
Like:
Hersbrucker 20 min boil
Saaz 5 min boil...

Thanks all for your advice, very helpful as always.
Well i found a great homebrew shop close to my house, their range of hops was extensive, however they had sold out of Hallertau so i purchased some Saaz, and Tettnanger teabags.
I am using the Tettnanger now, and will make a pilsner next, and give the saaz a whirl!
Thanx for your help!
Maimu.
