Crown Top Tallys/Longnecks

Postby NickSawyer » Wednesday Nov 21, 2007 3:12 pm

Hey guys
many of you may know that i recently (2 weeks today) put down my first ever batch. It was a Coopers Pale Ale and after just 2 weeks tastes great. Im sure it will get better although i am already happy with the outcome.

Ok, what i was wondering now is, where can i source some more bottles for my upcoming brews. I am able to get hold of many twist top stubbies however what i am really after is some tallys/longnecks. As i dont have the money to buy cases of longnecks from the bottleshop i was wondering how all you guys collected yours?

If anyone knows where i can buy bottles (preferably crown top longecks) i would be very grateful as i am eager to put down my next batch.

thanks,
nick

Crown Top Tallys/Longnecks

In SA there is a deposit on bottles which encourages returns. Recycling places here will collect the type of bottle you want for a fee (typically 50c for a long neck). You can also buy empty bottles in quantity from bottle suppliers although you may also find them in shops that sell supplies for bottling tomatoes.
I have an arrangement with beer drinking friends where they save me bottles and I "reward" them with samples of home brew. I encourage them to choose beer in good bottles rather than twist tops.
If you have open recycling crates in your neighbourhood you can also source bottles by checking out the local area and collecting the bottles that suit you.
Happy brewing!

Coopers long necks still have crown seals. you might just have to buy them and drink your way through them :D

I've seen boxes of tallies at e.g. local community museum when they have a book sale/fundraiser. Haven't bought them as I prefer stubs. You might try local fetes, flea markets, swaps etc.

Try ebay and weekend shopper in courier mail.

Also my local homebrew shop always knows of someone who has just gone to kegs and want to get rid of tallies. They are in Brissy though.

I think the going rate is $5-$6 a doz for crown seal tallies.

I bought 6 doz coopers tallies from ebay for about $40 I think. The best deal I ever did and the guy delivered them!!!!

Talk to the person that runs the local tip shop or recycling centre. Alot of times they will put what you want aside if you ask. They do not always keep bottles by default. I have gotten all sorts of great stuff this way!

My dad puts the effort in an buys a carton or two of longnecks a month and keeps the bottles for me... I'd do the same, except its VB and Carlton Mid.... I guess he knows if he gives me bottles, he'll get them back full a month or two later... I must have about 400 by now

ibrew has very reasonable post rates.

http://www.ibrew.com.au/html/equipment/ ... draft.html

They quoted me the following:

1 tap-a-draft system including white tap/regulator, drip tray, 1 x 6 litre bottle with standard screw cap, 1 x reusable long life cap with O ring, and 1 box of isi C02 chargers...$115.00

3 extra x 6 litre bottles with standard caps @ $15.00 each...$45.00
(long life caps are $4.50 each if required...these are good if you want to naturally prime and mature the beer longer)

Delivery for above to Bundaberg...$12.00 (subsidised delivery charge)

They also offered me a free maintenence kit ($12 value)!

If you contact them by phone, you`ll need to take a firm hand with the manager- and I`m not the first to say so either
But I got him sorted out with a bit of insistence :D
EDIT

This post relates to the tappa draft.

I`m implying exactly that the manager of Ibrew can be difficult to deal with via the phone, and I`m not the first to experience it.

If twist top tallies will suffice, go to your local pub and get them for free. I got 100 from the Pineapple in Brisvegas in one hit. they have served me very well for over three years without a breakage.

red dog, you guys in the switch just got brewers choice in Yamanto and I think they do tallies for cheaper than $8 at the one I go to in acacia ridge.
