It seems to vary from site to site... when rinsing grain (either steeped specialty or a mash) do you use clean water or runnings from the mash?

i did both, i ran 2lt of first runnings through the mash and then 5lt of sparge at 70*C.

the difference in the colour of both is to be seen.

Yeah, same.
BTW 170F is about 75 ~ 77C.

i dont really sparge. i do thin mashes (mainly because i use a plastic false bottom which floats & makes sparging a little difficult) i mash with about 6Litres of water per kilo of grain.. & recirculate the first 2-3litres of run off until the runoff is clear

wouldn't a pump oxidise the hot wort ?

have seen pics of quite a few set ups with them in use, so there must be a way to utilise them without oxidising.

nah i just use a jug..

i think it is possible to use a march pump to recirc as long as you run water thru it beforehand to expel the air

If you regulate the flow downstream of the pump it won't allow oxygen in. Remember, it is a closed system so you have to work hard at getting air in
