I'm trying to create a "Toohey's Pils" in a couple

Postby SniperBob » Saturday Nov 19, 2005 1:19 am

I'm rather new to these forums, so I'll be direct.

My mate rather likes the soapy over-commercialised dishwater that's called Toohey's pils.

His 21st is in a couple of weeks and I'd appreciate it if you all could supply some help as what I'd need to produce a similar, yet superior brew in a couple of weeks.

I have a refridgerator available to brew the beer at, yet it's just my fridge, and alas, no temperature control besides the strip alongsides my fermenter jammed inside my fridge.

Please help with the beginning, middle (meddle) and end of this brew, so I can give him something to enjoy.

I have all the materials available to someone close to a HBS (Ie, Saaz Hop pellets, liquid and dry malt extract) and I would appreciate all the help i could get.

Yours in brewing,

SniperBob

Try a Coopers Brewmaster Series Pilsner with a tin of the Coopers Light Malt extract. Get a Saaz teabag and steep it in the primary, then dry hop another one three or four days in.

If you are near a Country Brewer store, get a Wal's Pilsner kit and a bag of Ultrabrew.

Cheers,
Greg.

If you want a true copy of Tooheys Pils, just brew a simple Coopers lager, with brew enhancer 1, and saaz pellets.

Anything else, and it will have too much mouthfeel and flavour to be Pils.

Alternately, use an unhopped malt extract with BE1 and saaz. Depends on how much hops your friend likes.

You should note that if you do brew a pilsener at the proper temperature, ie 14-16*C, you wont be dinking them for at least 4-5 weeks.

It needs time to loose the sulfur smell, and to carbonate.

I have brewed the coopers pils, and it was outstanding. But it took 14 days in the fementer, and 4 weeks in the garage - which were both between 10-18*C the whole time.

Sorry to spoil the party bob. :(

You'd probably be better just buying him a carton of Tooheys Pils.

In my opinion most of the mates are not open to drinking homebrew and once you do convince them that's it's "as good as VB or New" they seem to think that because it's so cheap to make you don't mind giving it all away.

IMO Tooheys Pils doesn't taste much like a traditional pilsner anyway so I'd go for a lager that you know and like and add 15-20g Saaz hops for 5 minutes at the end of your boil.

Cheers,
Jay.

From memory its a bit of a nothing beer. So don't over boil your saaz hops.
Don't go for any bitterness. 5 mins tops.
maybe less sugars/malts in the mix??? How much alcohol is the original - about 4% or so I think.
Just make a bland tastless beer then water it down in the glass
- make a soda water shandy.
That'll get you a winner
Oh and don't forget to hit your friend over the head with a wet fish in the morning to give the hang-over feeling you get with Tooheys Pils.
Cheers
