The Mongrel

Postby tommo » Friday Jun 24, 2005 5:54 pm

G'day all'
Before i begin , ta Oliver for help on ice=naughty and apologies to munkey for jumping on the bad spelling bandwagon. (Working away and hadn't checked recent posts.)

Anyhoo, a long story short...

Pointed out to HBS attendant that both Coopers Pilsner cans on her shelf had the best before dates mysteriously scratched off with steel wool or similar.

After some minor haggling said cans were purchased for $5.00 each.

Some more snooping(that would make Columbo proud) located a 1kg can of Morgans Wheat Malt that once again had been scratched in transit Promptly snapped up for $4.00.

Thinking of combining,
Coopers Pils
Morgans Wheat
500g dex
50g SAAZ Pellet
Safale s-04
also have some Cascade pellets ( dry hopping )

Now then, does this qualify as a mongrel :?:

Am i not the maverick that i think i are :?:

Apologies for the long winded tour into the void that is tommo but have been working away from the fridge and i'm giving it a bit of a nudge this arvo

On closer inspection er indoors discovered that pilsner is only 6wk past date 8)

cheers for any input

Tommo,

Mongrel is such a harsh term, looking at your recipie I'd be more inclined to suggest that you have "introduced some hybrid vigour".

Sounds ok, let us know how it plays out.

Cheers,

Tommo,
one of my favourites is the Cooper's Blonde with liquid wheat malt, 250g each of wheat grain and pale grain, plus Saflager Yeast and 12g cascade hop. Personally I think that you'll come up with a great beer - so mongrel is a bit harsh! Your a budding cutting edge pedigree breeder as far as I'm concerned. I mean that in the nicest possible way of course!
Let it rip and pass on the results.

tommo,
assuming that you have these ingredients at a conveniently located HBS, select a bag or two as who can walk out with just one! Unless you want to crack the grain yourself, just make sure it has already been done.
Many have there own rules to follow when doing a mini-mash but you can:
1. Pour boiling water over the grain in a sanitised bowl/pot for about an hour. Strain this through a fine sieve into the fermenter. Rinse the grain with cold water, to get all the remaining goodies, and add this as well.
2. Place in pot with enough water to cover and hold at 60-70 degrees for about an hour, then follow the remaining steps.

Too easy!! and well worth the extra effort. I mostly do the second method. Do a search as there are many more tips from far more experienced punters than me on this topic.

Add some garlic and a few cloves.

Then you are on the right road

went with:

coopers pilsner 1.7kg
morgans wheat malt 1.0kg
coopers light dry malt .500g
coopers dextrose .250g
25g Saaz 30 min
zest of 3 oranges 20 min
1 hpd tsp coriander 15 min
15g Cascade 10 min
18.5g Saflager
23lt

Unlikely this is a fair dinky mongrel but it smelt better than a wet dog

Sorry dogger was unable to locate any garlic
