Cheers Kev, will try that. Anything else I should add to the above or is the 500g LDM / 1kg Dex an ok mix?

2nd Brew Ever - Ale this time

Hey all,

I have been enjoying my first ever brew over the last few weeks. It was a simple Coopers Lager with 1kg sugar and some saflager yeast. It turned out ok, and is improving every week as it matures. I am hoping to improve with my 2nd attempt and am trying an Ale.

Was at the super market ...

Re: First Brew

Have had no time and as such have had to leave bottling for a few days. Am all set to bottle tomorrow.

Just a few questions.

After I bottle should I throw these straight in the fridge? Or should I give them a few days in the bottle at fermentation temp (12-16C) and then throw them into the fridge ...

Re: First Brew

Well its almost time to bottle I think - will be 2 weeks this Sunday. Will take a sample and see what the gravity is like over the next few days. Hope I can read the hydrometer correctly.

I haven't seen the airlock bubble once yet - I haven't been too concerned as there is plenty of condensation on ...

Re: Two Saflager yeast packets - Pro's vs Con's

From the Fermentis website - http://www.fermentis.com/FO/EN/06-Ales/40-10_directions_hb.asp

To achieve the correct pitching rate use one sachet per 20 litres of wort for ales . Use one sachet for lager when fermenting at room temperature and two sachets for lager when fermenting cold e.g. 12C ...

Re: First Brew

Its about 4cm square, its already looking very soft and I can't see it blocking the tap. After 2-3 weeks it might even be broken up completely?

Re: First Brew

The label should be fairly clean, it did soak in hot water for 10-15mins. I am just spewing a bit got in there. Will leave it be and hopefully it won't make the brew taste funny.

Cheers.

PS - What effect does adding extra water have? A little less body and flavor I assume?

Re: First Brew

Do you think I should open the fermenter and try and get the bit of label out? Or just leave it to add some adhesive flavor? :(

Re: First Brew

Finally found the time to start my first brew. Couple of hiccups. Somehow we ended up filling the fermenter to 24.5L instead of 22L. Also I have just noticed this morning there is a small piece of the Coopers label on the surface of my brew!

First Brew

Only recently bought myself a Coopers micro brewery and am planning to start my first brew this week, perhaps tomorrow or Wednesday.

Starting out with the Lager kit that comes with the Coopers MB, I figure its safe to start out simple. I did grab myself some saflager yeast to swap out the ale yeast ...
