Afternoon all,

I'm about to make my first all-extract lager and need advice on an appropriate bittering hop to use? Will use Saaz for flavour/aroma, so will any high AA hop do for bittering?

Cheers,

Simon

Well, you can use any hop, and it will provide bittering. If you wish to make an Aussie style lager, then Pride of Ringwood, Super Pride, Super Alpha, or Cluster will fit the bill.

But, if you wish to make a European style lager, then you really should think about using the European Noble hops such as Saaz, Tettnanger, Hallertauer, Taurus, Hersbrucker, or Spalt etc etc.

Warra thanks,

But if I'm using these hops purely for bittering, so adding right at start of boil, does it matter what hops are used? i mean if you boil a hop for 45-60 mins will it impart any actual flavour on the brew, or just bitterness?

Yes, depending on how hard you boil, most of my AG Lagers were single addition & with a steady boil they carried over some nice flavours especially PoR Flowers, I prefer flowers for the freshness & the fact that they strain out much better at the end of the boil.

.
You forgot the newest High AA Ausie hop, Galaxy, that is what I'm using at present.
Must say though, I prefer PoR,,,,,,Hang'n out to harvest my own in a few months!!

Cheers, Mick.

Yes, I like to make a single hop brew with Noble hops.
I have tried with other bittering hops and while they can still be nice, I can still detect flavour coming through.
