Hi All
I will be attempting my first extract shortly. I'm using a rather small boilpot 15 lt ,so I cannot do a full boil. If i use, say 10lts as my boil would it be ok to make this up to the 23lt in my fermenter with 13lts of cold ( 2 deg ) water that I have chilled. I am hoping that I will not have to cool my 10lt wort down this way? Is this procedure ok or do you have to cool your wort down first before adding the makeup water?
thanks Kepp

If you plan to add your 10 litre boil to the fermenter without chilling it first, then even 13 litres at 2ºC will not get the temperature down far enough.

This is the calculation:
10 @ 100ºC = 1000
13 @ 2ºC = 26
Total 1026 divided by 23 = 44.6ºC

However, if you can take your boil pot and place it into a kitchen sink or laundry tub with cold water, you only need to chill the boil pot to about 30 to 35ºC for your proposed method to work.

10 @ 35ºC = 350
13 @ 2ºC = 26
Total 376 divided by 23 = 16.5ºC approx.

Perfect for pitching your yeast.

Ok Thanks One more question After reading some other topic I believe you need to increase your hops if doing a partial boil, is there a formula, and does this only apply to the bittering hops.

The theory is that a more concentrated boil will negatively affect the isomerisation of your hops.
If you use a program such as BeerSmith, and enter the appropriate figures and method, it will work it out for you.

There are other posts on that topic on this forum. I think Kevnlis and DrSmurto have done a few, if you wish to do a search.
Alternatively, give us your full recipe, and I'll try to put it through BeerSmith for you.

Alternatively, if you wish to take a simple way out, you can make up your 10 litres of wort to about 1.040 to 1.050 SG.
This is equal to 1kg to 1.25kg of LDME, or up to 1.5 litres of liquid extract.
Add the rest once your boil has about 10 minutes to go.

Incidentally, I find when using LDME for my starters, I add the LDME first to my pot, then cover it with cold water, and walk away. It seems to dissolve on its own without stirring over about a half hour to an hour.
