Worry about OG reading?

I just brewed a muntons yorkshire bitter with Brew Blend No. 20 - MALT PLUS BOOSTER + Muntons Gold Yeast + 5g Fuggles Hop Pellets and 10g Goldings Hop Pellets and before i added the yeast i had a gravity reading of 1052, the recommended is between 1040-1044. What does it mean if it is a bit higher? does it make a difference?

It could mean several things:
1. You hadn't mixed your brew thoroughly, so you got a false reading of a concentrated sample.
2. You didn't make your brew up to the full volume, so it is more concentrated, and hence the higher gravity.
3. Neither of 1 or 2 apply, and you will end up with a tasty brew with a somewhat higher alcohol level.
No matter what, I wouldn't worry about it, and it likely will turn out to be a tasty brew.

+1 that it might not be mixed thoroughly. I tip the warmed contents of the can on to a few litres of water in the fermenter and stir thoroughly, then once I've topped up to final volume stir again. One of those long plastic spoons or paddles that reach to the bottom of the fermenter (from HBS) really help to do this.

Plus, a good stir when it's under 70C will help add some oxygen that the yeast will appreciate when you pitch them into the fresh wort...
