Hello all,
Just a quick question to see whether liquid yeasts are able to be sent in the post, couriers etc
My understanding is they need to be kept refridgerated??
My local HBS has a couple but ive noticed they are out of date..

Re: Liquid Yeast
Yes they can be posted, they are usually sent express post with an ice pack. I have used yeats that were 6+ months out of date on my stir plate and they always take off no worries. If you want to pitch direct to the wort I suggest ordering the freshest possible pitchable White Labs you can find!

Re: Liquid Yeast
Ive had them mailed before and they arrived with no ice pack which concerned me a little but still no worries, yeast are pretty temp tollerant

Re: Liquid Yeast
I have had liquid yeasts sent over from the states twice without any fancy packaging and they have all been fine.
Re: Liquid Yeast
How important is it to keep them in the fridge after they have fermented out?
I normally make a starter then add 2/3 to the wort and then keep the rest for next time.
Had a couple outta the fridge for some time in a small bottle with an air lock in-due to space issues.

Don't re-invent the wheel, change the tyre..
Re: Liquid Yeast
They will certainly last longer in the fridge. Depending on the type of yeast it could easily last weeks/months out of the fridge though I would certainly not use any of the wort from the starter in this case.

I often buy out of date wyeast at half price, usually I find these sent without a gel pack.Never had a problem with them firing up
just takes a long time.(only buy in winter)
Fresh wyeast have always been sent with a gel pack, and will swell(once smacked) within 48hrs.
I'd never buy out of date wyeast in an Australian summer.
Different yeasts,different strokes
