Pilsner or Pale Malt Extract????

Post by holedigger »

Hi All,
Its my first post and I have a question...
Does any one know where to buy bulk (>2kg) Extra light malt extract???
It seems to be quite prevalent in the states but I can only find one supplier here (Morgans) and they don't sell bulk to the public?
Whats a chap to do?

Have a look at http://www.ibrew.com.au
He`s got imported Weyermanns Pilsner liq. malt in 4kg. plus. Freight on top of that of course.
I use his lite dry malt, @ $90 for 20 kg. I can`t do better.
$25 for 5kg.
cheeeeep.
Coopers lite liq.extract-$105 for 25 kg.
cheeeep cheeeep. :)

They go right up to 55 gal!

Though at $590 US they are priced very fairly IMHO. Add another $150 if you want the mash tun bottom and a further $40 for the hop screen.

He`s pretty well geared up there,no doubt about that
Kev, did your FIL try the liq. bulk extract from him? I`m wondering if the 25 kg. drum came with a tap on it? Probably not?

I think it is actually 28 kilos? 25L?

We did not get one, but I think we have one on the way next week! Still waiting for confirmation on that though.

Cheers,
Kev

Well this is the reply I got from them when I e-mailed for the quote:
Quote as requested

28kg pail Coopers light liquid malt extract is $105.00 Delivery via road transport to Bundaberg....$29.00
According to the Coopers website:

http://www.coopers.com.au/media/files/785.pdf

300 and 1300kg drums are available as well as the 28 kilo pails

Also available are 28 or 300kg lots of the Ale, Bitter, Lager, Stout, and Draught pre-hopped extracts.

Does not look like there is a tap on that pail either, in fact it looks like it may be quite hard to reseal!

I think the extra light may be the go for me, though I may look into availability and pricing on a pail of the Lager.

you`re right-28kg. That makes it even cheaper :) About $4.70 kg. and it`s at your front door :D
He must have made a blue on his website, it says 25 kg.

I just realised they also have 20kg boxes of dry extract. That may be the way to go. Much easier to store and work with!

I`d be surprised if it`s not the cheapest in Aus.
Good quality too.

$3.75 per kilo is far less than half what I pay at my local, and even delivered at $4.70 per kilo is only 20 cents more than half price!

I do AG, but would benefit from a bit of extract for GB, yeast starters, etc. I am still working on convincing my FIL that ditching the kits will be a good move...

Like I said, hopefully next week! I will be sure to let everyone know as soon as I have whatever it is I order in my hands, might even take photos for everyone to drool over

I just spoke to him, and he said---"It`s $90 for 20 kg while this stock lasts, then it`s going up to $108." The price on the website is THE CURRENT PRICE,he insists.

Hmmm... 20kg of dry extract will yield about the same gravity as 28kg of liquid right? So that is actually cheaper?

DISCLAIMER: I have had a few beers and a glass of wine already tonight so my maths might be a little off!

Dunno.....the bottom line is- he says it`s $90 for a 20 kg. bag, not $120 you were quoted.
Sheeeesh... how did this get started?

I just talked to my FIL and he said he was in for a 50/50 split with me on the dry extract! Now I just need to figure out what to do with 10 kilos of dry extract, the 100+kg of malt I already have is obviously not enough for one man!
