filtering out hops

i am ready to bottle the first batch i have ever added hops to.. In a previous post oliver told me to just chuck everything straight into the fermentor when i was done boiling, which i did... and now there seems to be quite alot of crap in my hydrometer. So i was thinking that i might put a piece of stocking in between the tap and bottle filler pipe to filter out some of the crap... is this a bad idea, or is there a better way to it?

.... and just give everyone a laugh, i asked my wife if she had any stockings i could use, and she promtly asked me "What colour?"

I used to use a piece of the wife for a grain sock

Did I?

This has been discussed before, I think.

Don't worry too much if a couple of bits of hop get into the bottle.

What you may find is that the little bottler gets clogged with hops initially. If it does, just turn off the tap and remove the tube. Disassemble the mechanism, clean it and put it back together. Then refit it and continue bottling. Because most of the hops will have settled on the bottom of the fermenter you should find that you don't have any more problems.

Sorry if I gave you a bum steer.

I was checking out the Home Brew shelf in Big W the other day. They have expanded their range somewhat.
They had spare parts for the various brand brewing kits and the Coopers tap has a 20mm extension on the inside with a filter, looks about stocking mesh size.
