just put down a coopers draught with kit yeast 24 hrs ago and there is a lot of foam forming, so much so it is almost touching the fermenter lid. Is this ok, have down 40 or so batches and never had this happen before ?

Yeah it has happened to me a couple times. This is where you will find out just how good your sanatisation is :P

Chances are pretty good the brew will be fine even if it does blow the top off your fermenter.

Don't worry about it. If the foam comes up out of your airlock, just clean up the top of your fermenter, take out the airlock, clean and sanitise it again, and replace it. Your brew will be fine.
This happened to me with a stout earlier this year, and it still drinks great 8 months later.

But follow 1 simple rule: anything that is out of the fermenter, stays out. Don't try and get it back inside.

I've found that only coopers does that, never had it happen with any other brand

I find it happens more with dark beers than anything else. And also with many liquid yeasts.

Only ever happened to me when using Coopers Bitter. And slightly warm temps.

I haven't used coopers since the overflow event because i got in a bit of shit from the missus  and i spent an hour cleaning the shit up. I keep my fermenter in the linen cupboard because it's got a tile floor and keeps it a bit cooler in hot weather. She reckons the sheets and towels smelt like beer, I didn't see the problem

I do Coopers mostly and sometimes get a foamy one. First one was with an airlock and it just got blasted for 2 days and made a mess. I changed to a meter of 8mm polyhose dunked in a jam jar and have never looked back.
