Gassy Pale Ale?

I've made my first pale ale brew, which is okay. But it's very gassy when opened.
If I roll the bottle gently before opening (to mix the sediment) it froths out about half the contents (750 ml bottle). If I don't roll, i burp after each sip like I've just skulled half a bottle of coke.

Whats causing this and how can I avoid in the future/fix it with my current bottles?

cheers,
Dan

You have probably over primed or bottled before fermentation has completely finished.
How much sugar/Dextrose did you use?

indecisive,
Chill the bottles down as cold as you can which will minimise the excessive frothing, the root cause I would imagine is either over priming or possibly the beer hadn't fully fermented out.
