Have you guys ever had the Scharers from The George at Picton?
Must say it is one of the best beers I have tasted...
If I could brew beer like this I would be a happy man!

Is that the really old pub that has a microbrewery onsite?

That's the one. Just recently sold. I havent been out there in years.

I have heard mixed reports about the quality of the beer (open fermentation vats with no temperature control) but I enjoyed a few pints of the lager recently at the Australian in the Rocks (not sure how far that is from shakey town?) But having said that I much prefer a pint of the LCPA or Grand Ridge Pilsener.
Last time I tried the Scharer's Bock (bottled) it was terrible

I wasn't overly thrilled with the quality of the beer. The lager beats the mass produced crap, but the bock is thoroughly disappointing.

Isnt he super traditional? If you want to experience a beer true to style in the 1700's he's the man - I hate anybody's bock, so thats no surprise, done properly bock isa strident beer only a mother could love. The striving towards brew to brew consistancy is what gave us mega brewery all tastes the same swill - someone has to make the effort to defend tradition - besides what else is worth seeing on the way to canberra?

I wouldn't exactly say it is a bock, more like a dark ale. Only worse dark ale I've had is Carlton Black.

God, Carlton Black is Peurile. It would have to be one of the worst beers available.

He's gone. Scharer hasn't brewed there in ages. Handed over duties to a female winemaker awhile ago & recently sold the premises to a pair of kids
& are you suggesting that all consistantly brewed beer is tastless?

I wasn't all that impressed when I was last there but that was some time ago!
Are they still brewing or given up now. Be a pity if they have...
