Hot weather, dead yeast?

Post by Hopping Mad »

HI Guys,

Just had some very hot weather here in syd 36c + , and think it may have killed my yeast. my 3 brews(2 are small and experimental) i have on have no bubbles and a what looks like a pretty dense yeast cake sitting on the bottom. my SG is stuck at 1012 and OG was 1038.

Should I throw it out or repitch some new yeast. or......... anything else????

I have some Lalvin ec-1118 wine yeast, or cooper kit yeast?

any suggestions please.......

How hot did the brew get?
How long have they been going?
What yeast? (assume Kit!)

Going by your sg, they could have been already finished. (A little higher than one would like)

Kit yeasts are pretty hardy (read idiot proof) & it would take a bit of time exposed to high temps for the brew to heat up to the 36 you mention, coolish nights even out hot days a bit.
As long as the brew itself did not go above low thirties, a kit yeast like Coopers will hang in there, may not be very happy!!!

Hmm 36+ you say???  it has been into the low to mid 40's here, my beer fridge is really struggeling out in the shed.

HI Mick,

One yeast is Lalvin ec-1118 for the "wifes" apple cider and the other is a Coopers yeast kit from a Real Ale tin, I assume they are all the same strain.....??

the brew did get to the low thirties, maybe 34 for a touch.

if I did repitch and there were no fermentables left, would the yeast actually do anything?

if the yeast is dead would I have to add some yeast for secondary.

Thanks

Sam
