i've been buying a bit of st. peter's green star lager recently, which comes in these 640ml bottles.. i prefer to look at them as a f'n big pint :D :wink:

I still can't figure out where this odd size came from.
An imperial pint is 568ml- that's why they started putting milk in 600ml bottles when we went metric, they just rounded it up a little.
So the old imperial quart (2 pints) was 1.14l, and they rounded that down to 1l for milk.
But if memory serves, beer was sold by the fluid ounce. 26 fluid ounces comes out at 740ml.
But 640ml?

So people have had no trouble refilling use beer bottles?

I might have to start saving some of my amber ale bottles...

None at all. The only think to be aware of is that some of the newer, thinner bottles are easily broken when capping, unless you're using a bench capper.

...and a bench capper is probably the best $50 odd you can spend on homebrew gear.

Looks like a Strongbow cider bottle, but it's brown.

Aha! That explains why I didn't recognise it.
I don't think I've ever drunk a Tooheys New, let alone bought a longneck of it.

Many beers throughout Asia and India (or is that the same?) come variously in 620, 630, 640 or 660 rolltops. I occasionally bring some back. But, as I have said before on this forum, best is 1litre San Mig Pale Pils (rolltop): costs less than A$1 from the supermarket, complete with contents! Even if you dont like San Mig, that is not an altogether bad deal.
Pity no enterprising importers have got on to this one yet.

I honestly have never been short of bottles with my current system of WANTED ads on the notice board of the local Shopping Ctr.

There seems to be so many 'retired' brewers out there it's not funny....
(hope i don't go that way) :shock:

Also don't forget your local Refuse Ctr Shop.

Do you guys have them down south ?

I can pick up a dozen roll top tallies in a plastic crate any time. $5.

That sounds like an idea, yardie. The guys at my local Safeway Liquor tell me they sell more longnecks than anything else. Be nice to close the circle.

On the other hand, I have never been short of bottles with my cunning combination of saving my empties and the occasional dive into a recycling bin.

I know there's one in Geelong. North Geelong I think it is. Fantastic joint with all kinds of stuff. Not sure about other locations around the place though.
Oliver - do you happen to know the name/address of this place? Spending the weekend in Geelong drinking/playing poker so I figure I may as well kill 2 birds with the one stone.
