It was a great session - but I have a confession to make. I didn't drink one of the Little Creatures, Erdinger Dunkels and only had one of the Hatlifter Stouts....I wanted to but the body went into self preservation mode at about 10:30pm!!!

Exec Summary:
Best Beer - White Shield IPA
Worst Beer - Sam Adams Boston Lager - which is a shame because I drank it from the tap in the US and it was an excellent session beer - we had a long night in Chicago drinking it and it's nowhere near the same beer in a small bottle.

Palate calibration of your own brews next to a commercial brew can also be educational.
It is with much sadness I drank the last of my batch of TL's Pikantus Dunkler Weizenbock clone, next to a Toohey's Old (won a six pack at golf, didn't buy them).
Although I think the Tooheys Old is a nice drink, the HB shat it all over as far as complexity and flavour are concerned, and was by far the better of the two.

The difference between Sam Adams tap and bottle is really that big huh? I gotta track some down on draft next time I go back to the US. I have never tried it from a tap but I'm pretty fond of the bottled version. Actually, it is my favorite beer that I can get here in Beijing.

Inspired by TLs palate calibration session and possibly due to a stack of empty kegs, i dropped into my fave bottle o on the way home last night and picked up these babies..



Had a TTL last night since i picked up 3 of them - cost me $60 all up for the 9 bottles but they are proper beer to be savoured at my leisure.

TTL reminded my yet again why i moved to AG.

I managed to score some quite fresh White Shield - It does reward further conditioning before refridgerating....if you can wait that long!!

Had the fursty ferret on Friday night. Popped the top then went looking for a glass and could smell the aroma a metre away!

Used to drink this one quite a bit in the UK so was nice to know that my memory isnt too bad - its a nice malty beer with a gentle hop flavour and robust aroma.

Kegged my Hobgoblin clone on Saturday night. I had planned on letting it sit for 2-3 months before getting stuck into it as its an Old Ale but with minimal beers on hand i had a few sneaky pints. Green, but i think it will be a top drop with some ageing.

my end of our fair city is obviously starved of that kind of selection.

I found white shield the other day, and it was 8.20 a bottle... that means you must've forked out a pretty penny for all that beer... but i guess it is all in the name of research and development...

3 bottles for $20 is the deal. The selection changes every month or so.

Paul - last time i told fellow brewers where this bottle shop was they raided the place of TTL before i had a chance to stock up.....

I should charge for this info....

And TL, the white shields is not in the fridge so will let it sit till the end of winter and then tuck into it (will buy a few more to see me through).

And finally, Paul, make sure you grab a Ruddles County while you are there. Along with TTL, its one of my fave pommy ales. I have a pack of Bramling Cross in the freezer to have a crack at this one too.

p.s. and for a palate calibration session... tomorrow is the SA Xmas in July case swap up in the Barossa so a dozen AG brewers will be getting together to swap beers, drink beer and talk beer. All in the surrounds of the Barossa Valley on a 17C sunny day!

I went to Bar on Gouger looking for TTL, but they didn't have it so i grabbed the Ruddles County.

Brilliant beer,got me back onto British Pales. I've been drinking Aussie micro pales all month.

Is Ruddles County brewed in England? there is no english on the back label, just something that looks incredibly foreign.

Brewed in Suffolk, Ruddles County Ale is a very nice beer. If you enjoyed the hop flavour profile, you've enjoyed Bramling Cross hops!!
