Although if he did brew he would have had the readdies to be able to afford a conical and herms and all the other nice brewing bling.

I know i havent even done a single AG brew yet, but i have been thinking about HERMS systems.
Is it as simple as being able to recirculate wort through a copper pipe in you HLT?
I was thinking about putting a copper pipe in my HLT and recirculating the wort with a pump that is controlled by the temp of the wort in the mash tun... If for a temp step infusion mash you put the 50-60C water in the mash tun to start the conversion, all the water you'll have heating up in the HLT will be you sparge water which should be about 80C (unless you want to have the HLT boil the water for the next temp step addition). if you recirculate wort through 80C water, there should be some sort of gradual temp increase in the mash tun, especially when you are pumping at 1L/min.
I just thought to myself, if i want to do step infusion mashing, i'll have to have about 5L of boiling water ready to chuck in the mash tun to increase the temp from 55ish to 62-67C? i (will) already have a perfectly good urn with 20L of 80C water chugging away waiting for the conversion to finish, why cant i just use that heat source? I have access to a variable flow peristaltic pump and plenty of high temp tubing. all i'd need is a mashmaster temp controller as a feedback for pump depending on the wort temp.
has anyone comtemplated doing this?
I just thought for a couple of extra bucks, you could have a rather simple way of having consistency with the mash temps... and be left with more sparge water to rinse.
