I end up doing both. I have my 'house brews' which just consume a similar amount of similar stuff (I vary it a little and buy stuff - mainly hops - on spec to just try) and then there are brews that I design/steal a recipe for and then go buy stuff for.

Generally speaking, both end up equally drinkable (or not). I think the question is interesting though - it probably warrants another topic!

Currently 20 kegged beers on tap. Approx 300 empty kegs,
Approx 4MT of grain
80+ different hops in the cold room...
