Newbie - bottle pressure ?

Post by SuperBroo »

Hi everyone,
Chris in WA here,
love this forum, heaps of info :)

I just started brewing again after a few years being too busy, and am now hanging out for some real beer again.
I'm just brewing the standard 1 can 1 kilo stuff with malt etc for now.

I was wondering if anyone could tell me approximately what pressure would be in a stubbie / bottle when its ready to drink.

I have a hairbrain sceme (that most likely wont work, but is worth a try) for carbonating bottles without adding sugar when the bottle is capped, but to get it half right I need to know what pressure the bottles would be at when ready to drink.
I would assume 1 to 2 psi would be about it ?

If anyone knows it would save me a lot of pain experimenting.

Basically I want to make a spring loaded plunger / capper with a piston which allows the Co2 in from a sodastream cylinder, and you just pull down slightly, allowing the gas in, then wait about 5 seconds while it purges, then pull down and cap it.
The stroke of the piston would also compress the gas into the bottle, then it at the end of the stroke the cap is pressed on.

If this whacky idea works it would eliminate the sediment in the bottles.
Plus you could later quite easily store and use the Co2 from your brew to put into the bottles maybe.

Please tell me why this wont work if you have any reasons.

Anyway, have a safe and happy xmas break everyone,

Happy Brewing :)

It would be around 10 psi because thats pretty much the perfect pouring psi for a keg as well as what a gas my kegs too, to have them carbonated..
I love hair brain schemes personal but my i give u a helpfully hit,,, buy a beer fridge and 4 kegs ull be happier in the long run..

I bottle exclusively but you could use something like this: http://www.craftbrewer.com.au/shop/details.asp?PID=870

Or a counter pressure bottle filler: http://www.craftbrewer.com.au/shop/details.asp?PID=3246

You can get similar products from other retailers of course.

OMG so you mean THAT .... IF i had a life & i got invited to BBQs and Birthdays and Weddings and outings AND If i did happen to drink there there was someone ells in my family or a mate that would drive me home afterwords if i had a drink ?

Well thats stretching it a bit but lets just say that 2 sec Before hell freezes over this cam true then every one at the BBQ would think i was the coolest guy around or a raging alco because i would rock up with this ..

A 9 litter keg filled with my best home brew prob around 8% alc / (you can also get 5 litter kegs too)

Image

A Co2 Charger that the refills cost around 3 bucks a pop

Image

And a tap to fill my favorite schooner glass up

Image

And of coarse a 20liter bucket from bunnings filled with ice to keep it amazingly cold for hrs

Shit no wounder no one ever invites me to party's any more
