Just wondering if the shape of fermenters has any effect on fermentation. I was in a local camping store and found a water container (30L) with a large airtight lid, same lid as coopers fermenter. The thing is, this container is only as round as the coopers lid, so it's about 600mm tall (2ft). Graduations are marked on the side similar to other fermenters and it has a tap outlet. Anyway for $19 I bought it and will fill this weekend. My concern is will the small surface area of the wort have any effect on yeast performance. To date I have only used ale yeasts.
Cheers Planner

Re: Fermenter Shape
I'm sure you'll be fine. Not a problem.
It's not as if the yeasts need the elbow room, after all, they're pretty tiny and hungry critters. They'll find the sugars to work on, howrver high you stack them.
Remember, they do the job in the bottle carbing it up, and bottles are probably narrower than your new fermenter.

Didn't get a chance this weekend to use the new fermenter, got sidetracked and spent too much time empting bottles and no time filling.
