Using Kit Yeast as Nutrient

Post by billybushcook »

Whats' the go??, have heard a few of you mention it before but never really thought about it.
It seems to me if I just threw it in the brew along with the S-04 they would have a punch up & the Coopers yeast would more than likely win out because it is the more aggressive of the two.
I now have 4 pkts of Coopers kit yeast in the fridge & they need a new home!

So, do you add it to the boil to kill it or something?

Cheers, Mick.

Add it to the boil for the last 10 minutes or so.
That will kill the yeast, but it should provide some nutrition to the S-04.

I've never tested it to see whether it really provides a benefit.
I'd say if you really want to give your yeast some proper nutrition, you might be better off obtaining some proper yeast nutrient.

I threw a pack of coopers yeast in a barley wine I did last week.. not sure if it helped but two packs of US-05 took it from 1.095 to 1.032 in 6 days

No sense doing this with dry yeast, they have all the nutrient they need...
Prost and happy brewing!
