New to hops and grains

Post by Workie »

Ok, so this is only the second time I've used some extra hops and grains. So a bit of help would be greatly appreciated on comming up with something that taste ok.
Here's what I've got in the way of ingrediants...

1.7kg tin of Coopers Draught
1.5kg tin of Morgans Extra Pale LME
300g of crystal
30g of Cascade
15g Goldings

My main problem is how much crystal (if any), and what to do with the hops?

Any suggestions would be of great help.

Cheers.

Welcome Workie,

I reckon half the grain for a batch, do a search on "steeping grain" and there will be plenty of info.

As for hops, I reckon use either all of the goldings or all of the cascade, but I am not a fan of mixing them. But funnily enough I do enjoy the odd Mountain Goat Hightail ale... I think it will just be easier and better to taste what they add to the beer by themselves.

Perhaps you should get another identical can and brew with the other hops and the rest of the grain and compare the two.

Bizier,
Thanks mate, that's probably a good idea.

Do ya rekon if I went all of the Cascade I should chuck say 15g in @ 20min, then the last 15g in @10? Or am I way off the mark?

Cheers.

Sounds good.

That is right where you want to be on top of the kit, if you add it at 30 or more, you might be getting significantly more bitterness and less aroma. You will mostly get the flavour and aroma and only a little bitterness.

Easy to make something that tastes OK using grains and hops on top of a kit, they really make it tastes like proper beer IMO.
