+1 on the Real Ale and 1kg LDM.
The Real Ale is a great starting point for experimenting with a few different styles. I find it's a nicely flexible kit that you can easily add quite a variety of hops to to take it in different directions, and the end result is good. I've used Hallertau, Cascade, Amarillo, Goldings and Fuggles (no, not all at the same time!) with various additions of specialty grains and/or different malt extracts to tweak the beer. It's one of the best kits, in my humble opinion, for anyone new to brewing to play around with.
