Non-alcoholic ginger beer

Post by Eureka »

Anyone got a good recipe for a great non-alcoholic ginger beer? I have a can of coopers ginger beer at my disposal. The kids have been nagging me for weeks!! 8)

You'll find instructions on the Coopers Ginger Beer can to make it up to be non-alcoholic.

From memory, basically all you do is mix up the kit, yeast nutrient and yeast with water and a little sugar then bottle it. The small amount of sugar ferments in the bottle and carbonates the ginger beer. There will be a little alcohol, but so little that you won't even feel it.

Unless you force carbonate (ie keg), there's no other way of carbonating your ginger beer.

Cheers,

Oliver

Yes I do acknowledge the instructions on the can but I'm looking for a better recipe to make up rather than the boring ol' can instructions.

I ended up with:

1 x can of Cooper's Ginger Beer kit
250g raw sugar
1 x grated piece of ginger
1 x packet of ginger pieces
Rind of 2 lemons
Juice of 2 lemons
2 tps mixed spice

Boiled the ginger, 2 lt of water, sugar, rind, lemons and spices on the stovetop for 20 minutes.

Strained liquid into fermenter. Placed the solids into a piece of pantihose and placed into the fermenter. Mixed it all up in the fermenter and made up a total volume 17 lts.

Did you de-pith the lemon rind?

I find it adds an unpleasant flavour otherwise.

1014. This will probably end up being alcoholic. Damn! I'll just have to drink it myself!

Why not let the kids drink the alcoholic one...

...sure it's highly illegal and they would be absolute a-holes for 15-30min till they passed out, but once they do you have the rest of the day to relax in peace and quiet. With an added bonus of them being very suseptable payback from the years of torture they have put you through the next morning >:)

Is it a bad thing that i'm having a child of my own soon :P
I never said i didn't like kids, I just can't eat a whole one :D

The final SG turned out at 1004. So that's a low alcohol ginger beer at 1.8%.

Looks like its the way to go for serving up at Chrissy.

Tastes yummy though. :P
