The good, the bad and the ugly of commercial beer and breweries, including microbreweries and craft breweries.

Ladies' Beer

Post by Oliver »

Guys and gals,

Just wondering your thoughts on the above subject.

It seems to me that, in general, the ladies like lighter, easy drinking styles of beer (Cooper's Pale Ale, Corona, even Bud, etc) to pilsner, heavier ales, dark beers, stouts and the like that tend, in my experience, to be the realm of blokes.

Is this your general experience, too?

Cor-rect again, Mr M. Heavier beers tend to leave a girl bloated, burpy and generally feeling fairly unattractive. My personal fave is the ol' Corona, with a slice of refreshing citrus. Can drink dozens of them without feeling like I've just cooked a muffin in my pants.

True - I do tend to like the lighter beers more. I'm a huge fan of wheat beer, and I find I don't like pale ales because of the bitterness. I do appreciate a good stout, but usually just for sipping rather than quaffing.

So I find that as long as the beer tastes good and doesn't have an unpleasant aftertaste that I can drink it quite happily. Body doesn't worry me too much, but it's the bitterness and taste that I worry about.

(and btw on a slightly related note, I've been trying to figure out what the "Blonde Coq" beer they serve at Lucky Coq on Chapel street is. Have only tried it a couple of times, but I find it delicious. It's light, fizzy and cloudy, and served with a slice of lemon. Delicious!)

In my experience, yes. Only one I know who will drink it all.

Give the Erdinger Wiezen and Krystals a try. It is a very short list of shop beers that I like more than the Wiezen. If you've not already, of course.

My girlfriend doesn't quite fit that stereotype of only lighter beers, although she will only usually have 1 or 2 beers at most in a session. She drinks any of my homebrew, Tooheys Old and Guinness and she hates the commercial crap and Corona's.

Cheers Greg, will give them a shot :D Are they widely available say at Coles/Safeway liquor, or should I head to Dan Murphys/Purvis to pick them up?
