Fermenter Disaster

Post by cavanor »

While moving my fermenter last night I caught the tap on a shelf and of course the whole tap fell off and beer went everywhere! Anybody know a good way to secure the tap better :)

To make matters worse, earlier in the day I found out that my hydrometer definately doesnt bounce.

Sorry to hear of your disaster. I don't have an answer for you I can only tell you what did not work for me! I tried silicone and that did not stick to the plastic too well. I did not try epoxy but I suspect it will not stick too well either. The tap on my bunnings fermenter leaves a lot to be desired...nothing easy comes to mind... :?

Cavanor,
I have done exactly the same thing a while ago, it was using one of the cheaper fermenters (purchased from bunnings). IMHO they are cheap BUT nasty, I bought two and the taps on niether of them screw in very securely. I have used the plumbers white PVC tap, which did help but it's still not as good as my other fermenters purchased from the HBS.

I also purchased a seperate tap from the HBS hoping that this would fix the problem, the threads are a different size so the HBS tap doesn't fit.

To fix my problem I simply replaced with tap with the original screw in bund that came with it and syphon out of these fermenters. You've just got to remove the bung and clean each time you use the fermenter, as you will get some sediment and trub that somehow always gets into the thread area.

I wouldn't try to permenantly fix the tap in place because I think you'll find it almost impossible to clean satisfactorily.

Try the plumbers PVC tape, or a screw in bung.
