Not going to bother next year if the last two years are an indication of what we get. Usually you would think the judges sheets are something you can use to improve your brewing practices but I'm finding each year the judges differ so much and actually sway away from the BJCP beer guidelines.....
My Saison was dry.........and that's a bad characteristic for a Saison? Its actually part of the style with the attenuation for this yeast and is desired. That and the same judge said at the top of the page "Lacks yeast character"......then in the final comments actually says "Yeast character is probably spot on".......
I've often had beers judged as good beers but not quite to style and I'm happy with that as they are usually tweaked to my own tastes after all. But this year its again all over the place.
My English pale ale to one judge was spicy and herbal as he obviously got the EKG and late and dry hopping with styrian goldings yet another judge wrote "no hop aroma at all".......
Think I'll save my dollars next year and just rely on local brewer mates to give me an honest opinion. I'm just a little disappointed as its not really helpful to my brewing.
3 beers and all three pretty much at the 100pt mark but its the notes I cared about more.
Dr Smurto you are accredited right? Think I'll be sending your more free beer from now on instead.
