Naming your beers: Your favourite names and worst/best puns.

Worst/best puns because the ones that make you groan are often the best.

I've seen a few good brew names crop up around the place, so I thought I'd ask you for what you (or others) have named your special brews that need acknowledging with a title.

Maybe sometimes the name has come before a brew? I want to brew a beer that I could call Real Ale Madrid for some bad pun action, but I can't think of a style that would befit the name...

My house stout is called 'S'Tough Stout and my house bitter is called The Sheriff of Nottingham because it was originally brewed with Nottingham dry yeast. It has kept the name even now that I've switched to 1275 (Thames Valley.)

We have soooo much fun naming beers here. Most of them are named by my mates and I on friday night beers as you can imagine.

We have....

Benson-Chocolate Porter
Dildo-Amarillo ale
Polygamy-APA
Budgie Smuggler-APA
Rommel-Doppelbock
Thrush-Belgian wheat
Schmuut-American Wheat
St Chad-Dark strong Belgian
Daddy Dubbel-Belgian Dubbel
Old Mac-Saison
Landlord-Obviously landlord
Bismark-German Lager
Funky monk-Belgian Trippel

I think I've left a few off but these are the ones that pop for now. We also have our beer swilling crew that drink here at the brewery know as 'The Yeastie Boyz'

Beer taps all have labels with beer names and most get labels for any bottling thats done.

I have only named one,
a mate stayed over and we decided to get cracking early on a Sunday and do 2 AG brews, one after the other, both the same brew, which was a mild (watered down basically) version of DSGA.

Well, by the time we got to boiling the second lot, we were a bit wobbly (and the footy was on the telly) and we stuffed up the flavour hops type and amount, put in cascade instead of Amarillo, and I think 30g instead of 20 or something like that.

The brew ended up sensational anyway, and i have made another one since, my mate named it the 'OOps Ale'.

I was also thinking about calling the most recent lager Born Slippy if it ends up good, but Chadjaja beat me to it. It seems a bit wrong if somebody else has done it first...

I am very boring and generally name my beers after the style i am brewing. The few exceptions to date are -

Prince of Darkness (brown porter/dark ale)
Big Bertha (english barleywine)

Oh please good Dr can't you see mine are named after the style too? You just need to look into it a bit more thats all :P

Dildo-Amarillo ale-Well its an Amarillo ale but my drunk cuz called it Armadildo......that got shortened to Dildo of course and its stuck. Many facebook updates have since read..."Spent a night at the brewery and had 8 dildos in me by the time I left"

Benson-OK its slightly inappropriate but anyone remember the 80's sitcom of the same name? Dark beer of course.

Polygamy-APA-Well we couldn't stop at one....

Budgie Smuggler-APA-OK had nothing to do with style but made a bbq and we are all roadies and hence budgie smugglers.

Rommel-Doppelbock-Who else is more likely to be a dark German? Erwin Rommel that lead the Africa corps in WWII who cooked in the hot climate and had a great tan.

Thrush-Belgian wheat-Well the American wheat is called Schmut(A rude word for some) This is a funkier belgian version. Its a funky schmut.

Schmut-American Wheat-schmutziges Spülwasser (German for dirty dishwater) Just like it looks...Got shortened to Schmut though.

St Chad-Dark strong Belgian-What else could it be but a Belgian.

Daddy Dubbel-Belgian Dubbel-Again the style is in the name and I made it with my father in law.

Old Mac-Saison-Its a farmhouse ale...

Landlord-Obviously landlord-Not to style but more a clone that tells you what beer it is

Bismark-German Lager-Its a German that goes down well. Just the ship itself in the north sea.

Funky monk-Belgian Trippel-Again is HAS to be a Belgian..

People don't even bother to ask for beers like a porter anymore....they simply shout "Got any of that Benson on tap?"

As you can see its all pretty obvious......  In any case if Alan is reading this he will go with my defence of.....Brendan is to blame.. :P

Twisted Gut APA.
Brewed in honour of the dragon-in-law's surgery to correct a twisted bowel. Mrs warra has never been happy about the name.

Hobbled Together.
An ale in the style of Hobgoblin.

Weizguy Dunkel.
Doesn't really need explanation. If it does, what are you doing on this forum?

Baby Chuck's Brown Ale.
Daughter in law was pregnant with our first grandchild, and had a regular chuck each day. Granddaughter was nicknamed Chuck before she was born.

Snugglebunny Pale Ale.
Our pug runs with a bunny hop style. Snugglebunny is my nickname for her.

OK, I'm back off this forum until November.

I store my PET bottles in the boxes they come from and usually write on the box whats inside.

When storing my english bitter i ended up writing on the box Rooster Bitter.

Just so happened it was NRL Grand Final day too, then we lost :?

Only started naming the last few.

Shed Floor Ale (that's where the first batch ended up)
Hare and Copper Ale (most productive trout-fly of the season)
Vasodilator Stout (would have been a better name for a doppelbock)
Holy Cow IIPA

I reckon there is a bit of potential with the -ator suffix denoting a dopelbock.... Procrastinator.... Liberator.... Mastur....
Currently drinking: BIAB DrS GA, BIAB Californian lager, doppelbock of sorts
In the Pipeline: landlord?

The cerveza style my mrs and I made was made in the same fermenter as the GB, she often refers to it as froots and roots.. which is also how she talks when she's being cute.

Like you Bum I haven't really named my brewery. I play around with names for it but have never settled on one or a logo.

Angas Creek Brewery is probably the lead candidate given Angas Creek runs through my backyard and my hop plantation is right next to it. On the other side is a Mount so i had visions of a logo with a river flowing down a mountain although the creek never actually gets close to the mountain..... With a few hops floating in it but then it becomes too close to the Pure Blonde ad (which i did enjoy for the attractive ladies and choice of a bad (so bad it's good?) 90s glam metal song)

I did originally want Mad Scientist Brewing Co but that name is taken albeit since it was founded in 2002 no beer has been produced. But, given that it is an american company i haven't used that name for fear of having my arse royally sued by the overly litigious yanks.

Any creative souls out there who want to design such a logo? I could pay in beer
