It is definitely bitter but the bitterness is smooth but firm. It is nothing like the more aggressive Green Flash beers (now, that is what a complete lack of balance tastes like). I think you get a fairly prominent malt profile in the Torpedo, all things considered. It is the late hopping that is lacking - which is surprising given the story of the name of the beer.

IMO, YMMV, etc. (LOL)

Theakston's Old Peculier.

Malty. English. Casts a big shadow.

The words legend(ary) and famous appear no fewer than four times on the labelling. Alot to live up to me thinks.

Some Earle's Stone & Wood. Definitely the better of the two brews I have put down since moving and also much better than the last batch of same. Just not as good with dodgy old extract, just highlights the difference fresh extract makes. Now that I've moved south I had to carb in my brew fridge with heat pad and fridgemate but worked a treat.

Some darn good drops there Earle but expensive I'd say. Just a few at a time would be the go.
Have you or anyone else tried the Rasputin Imperial stout you refer, if so what's it like if not your first sample Earl. :D :D

If the Old Rasputin is on tap get that and nothing but that. Gorgeous beer. Bottled it is a little bit whatever.

A Dark Ale, with molasses and harvested English bitter yeast. A lovely drop, well my palate says so. :D

Ballast Point Big Eye IPA.

Not bad. Good condition. Why is it in Dan's?

What are you drinking now?

Lemonade cooked up and put down a few days before me and the missus ducked off to the states a year ago. Been playing with differing glucose/sucrose syrups to back-sweeten it and think I've now got it perfect.

A Renaissance Brewing Perfection Pale Ale in my hotel room in Wellington. The great thing about NZ is that beer o'clock is two hours before it is in Australia!

The Perfection Pale is a very tasty beer with a great flavour and solid bitterness. The only two things that let it down are a soapy head and overcarbonation.

The next question is, what am I drinking next, the Epic Pale Ale or Hopwired IPA ...

Image

I picked up the three at the supermarket in central Wellington for about $NZ20.

Instead I could have had Coopers longnecks for $NZ4.95 or a 12-pack of Coopers Pale Ale for $NZ20 (the equivalent of about 45c Australian  ).

Last night's tasting was a Kortegast Sparkling Ale (a fine beer, made with an old hop variety, Hokitika) from Christchurch, an Emerson's London Porter (a delicious beer, although borderline stout, I reckon) from Dunedin and a Monteith's Black Beer from one of three locations where it's brewed.

Not a bad trade-off given I am spending the evenings in front of a laptop by myself in a hotel room, doing work ...

Had a Coopers Celebration Ale earlier. Yeah, probably a fairly fitting beer for the purpose. Not entirely worth buying, however. Try one instead of a box, if you must. A bit sweeter, more deeply coloured, firmly bittered version of Sparkling.

Seriously can't remember much after the boilermaker masterclass. Won't be doing that one again.

White Rabbit Dark Ale and The Little Rabbit at the brewery earlier today. The dark is much nicer on tap than in bottle (from Dan's). Little Rabbit is a fairly boring belgian thingo.

Hightails have been the order of the evening - not really a "go to" beer for me but it is slim pickings here in Healsville.

Spent a couple of hours at the Holgate Brewhouse yesterday. Had the tasting paddle - a flight of eight small glasses.

Pilsener - a lovely, easy, clean pilsener with lovely dry saaz finish.
Mt Macedon Ale - APA - deep brassy colour, good balance, well hopped.
Brick Kiln wheat beer - hefeweizen - as is usual for me, I struggle to say nice things about wheat beers.
ESB - a hand-pumped, un-chilled ESB. A cracker beer. Hoppier than any I recall drinking in the UK, but I love it.
Gruit Expectations - An un-hopped ale! Bittered with herbs like the ancients used to do before hops. Properly eye-opening. Herby, sweet, spicy....
Hopinator - double IPA - 68 IBU and plenty of that was added late. But well balanced, with plenty of body to carry it. Very nice.
Temptress - chocolate porter - a stunning hand-pumped porter, chewy, with cocoa added. Has won some awards. I bought some to take home.
Double Trouble - Belgian Dubbel - surprisingly easy to drink, gentler on the palate than most of the Belgians I have drunk. 8% but no alcohol warmth on the finish.

And they have a decent menu too, apparently recently fancied up. I had a venison burger and chips, which was excellent. The few other lunchtime gobblers were also pretty happy.
Currently drinking: BIAB DrS GA, BIAB Californian lager, doppelbock of sorts
In the Pipeline: landlord?

Hobgoblin Red Ruby thingo, bloody gorgeous. I really love the earthy grain flavours in some beers, this is one of them.

Bullfrog secured me an urn last week, plus is providing coaching for my move to AG.
I will make beer like this one day.
