Negro Modelo

The good, the bad and the ugly of commercial beer and breweries, including microbreweries and craft breweries.

Negro Modelo

Anyone tried this? Thoughts?

I tried it a while back and thought it was a bit sweet for my taste but drinkable.
Coopers.

I liked it, but that was a while back. Haven't had one for a long time.

nothing beats pacifico south of the border,
the one and only

but some cheap beer=tecate, like piss in a can...
used to use it as a marinade on lobsters
gives it that zing!

There's nothing like piss to add zing to lobster, I always say. :lol: :lol:

Not that it matters, and not to be a smartass (what, me be a smartass??), but the correct spelling of the beer that is the subject of this thread is Negra Modelo. I say this so that in case someone wanted to do a Google search, he probably would get more hits. The reason for the "a" ending on the adjective is because it is modifying the feminine noun cerveza rather than the brand name Modelo.

Cheers,
John

Jai alai, lacrosse, polo...never cared for any of them personally. I bet the best part of watching jai alai was the cerveza.

Hey, buscador, I picked up 6-ers of Pacifico Clara and Negra Modelo last night. I've got to get off the computer (it's 3:10 am here), so my tasting notes are short...but a thumbs-up on both. I'd say both are good but neither is great. Pacifico Clara is a pretty good pilsener with a pretty clean finish; not the best pils I have tried, but I like it. Thanks for the recommendation. Each 6-er was $8.65 US. BTW, both brands and Corona are distributed by Grupo Modelo. I hope they don't screw up Pacifico Clara.

Cheers,
John

i tend to drink the native brew whereever i am, good thing Australia has some remarkable micros

from what I remeber, i could always find South Australian ports and other wines, but never came across beer...

let me know as I want to pass it on to some friends..this is your homework, sounds more fun than my usual Friday nites :D :D

I live in a dry county, and it's about a 30-minute drive (one way) to buy alcohol. Of the three liquor stores nearest me, the store I frequent has the best selection of beers. That being said, the selection is not spectacular. There are some stores in North Little Rock and in Little Rock that allegedly have a good selection of imports. I'm guessing they probably carry Coopers or some other Aussie brands. But going to one of those stores would add 45-50 minutes to my already-long round trip. As I'm sure you're well aware, gasoline/petrol is terribly expensive (it's been over $3.00 US/gallon here lately. Since we in Arkansas get our gasoline cheaper than a lot of the US, due to our proximity to the refineries, you can imagine what it's been selling for elsewhere).

So Aussie brews, you say? I'm sad to say the answer is Fosters and not much else. It's sold in 6-packs of bottles and in an individual 25-oz. can. I'd been tempted to try it, but as the native Aussies on this site don't care for it, I haven't tried it yet. I'll say one thing for Fosters, though; their advertisements are catchy and at least with me, have generated an interest in trying their product, so their marketing has worked pretty well. I guess they figure if they can't sell their beer at home, they can try to develop a niche market abroad.

I'm 90% sure I've seen Boags in the store as well, but I didn't know it was an Aussie brand at the time and haven't paid any attention to it. I won't be going to the store for another week or two, but when I do, I will look for Boags.

As far as imports in general are concerned, here are the brands I can remember seeing in the store I frequent. I'm positive that this is not an exhaustive list, though. And if one of these is not an import, sue me; some of these may be produced in the States for all I know.

Amstel (Light and possibly other varieties)
* Asahi (Super Dry?)
* Beck's (multiple varieties)
* Boags (not sure which variety)
Corona/Coronita/Corona Light
* Dos Equis (two varieties)
Foster's Lager
Grolsch (one of my favs) (no swing-top bottles lately, though) :(
* Guinness (multiple varieties?)
Heineken
* Killian's Irish Red
* Labatt's Blue (often out of stock)
Modelo and Negra Modelo
Molson Canadian, Golden, and Ice
* Moosehead
* Newcastle Brown Ale
Pacifico Clara
* Pilsner Urquell
Red Stripe
* Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout (over $4 US for an individual, approx. 18-oz. bottle)
* Sapporo
* Sol
St. Pauli Girl
Stella Artois
Tecate
* Warsteiner (multiple varieties)

Now, buscador, YOUR homework is to tell me which two or three of the aforementioned brands with an asterisk next to them I should try. Regarding the brands without an asterisk, either I have tried them or I have little or no interest in trying them.

Cheers,
John

I have gotten that very distinct impression from several blokes on this site! :)

Curiously, Grupo Modelo distributes a Mexican brand called Victoria, which from all appearances is completely unrelated to the Aussie brand.

Oh you poor thing. $3.00/gallon=$0.79/litre (A$0.95). Here in Melbourne it's been over $1.40/litre and is currently about $1.28. I'm pretty OT here, aren't I? :P

It's not popular in Australia at all, but is very popular in Europe. One of the reasons for this is that the European Fosters is made in Germany, and I've heard that it's much better as a result. It would be interesting if you could have a look at a can and see where the US cans come from.
* Newcastle Brown Ale
* Pilsner Urquell

would be my recommendation. The Boags brews are nice, but they're not particularly interesting, just clean crisp lagers made from the beautiful pristine water of Tasmania, the Apple Isle.

Don't get me wrong, mate; I know petrol is extremely expensive there. The only thing I can relate it to is what we pay for it in the States, and since buscador is from the US, I knew he could put the US price in context with what he has experienced. But too right, mate; petrol is bloody expensive in Oz and everywhere. While I complain about the price, at the same time I'm appreciative that we're not paying what some citizens of other countries are paying.

In the US, they advertise Fosters as being "Australian for 'beer'." Either it's ironic that when the average Aussie thinks about having a beer, he doesn't think of Fosters, or else it's false advertising, pure and simple. Certainly, it's all an advertising gimmick, but I'm guessing a pretty successful one because their ads are catchy.

Perhaps the water has a lot to do with the Aussie Fosters' lack of quality. Maybe Fosters needs to move their Aussie operations to Tassie so they can take advantage of the (apparently) better water.

I'll do that.

That's two votes for NBA. I'll have to give it a go.
