coopers real ale

has anyone made up a brew from coopers real ale ? I know if I get all the stuff coopers recomend will produce a reasnobley good beer.But I'm after any advice for ingredients that will make it a great beer havent purchased any thing yet just wanted some input as is it worth doing or forget it go get a quality kit from the local brew shop

Based on the link above. A bitter roasty ale, plenty of character.
I reckon if you put some grains and add hops there's nothing wrong with coopers kits (or any other all malt kit for that matter).

There is always a can of Coopers Real Ale in my cupboard. Pick it up when on special at Supermarket.

Latest recipe:
1 can Real Ale
1kg Coopers BE2
500g LDME
20g Goldings Steeped
Supplied Yeast
7 Days Ferment
7 Days Rack

Dead cheap. Dead simple. Dead tasty. A genuine Ale IMHO.

I went with Pete's latest recipe and the aroma comming off the brew is fantastic I think this is going to be a realy good beer!(cant wait to try) at present fermentation is going well will rack next week.This was my first attempt at using hops and seeping enjoyed the process and looking forward to the next time.Thanks again Pete!

+1kg dd malt
+500g honey
2 packs coopers yeast so 14g
Turned out very tasty, I also boiled honey and skimmed off whit crap
Maybe next time add some hops

I've done it a couple of times and it's a great drop. Use cascade for flavouring hops if you want to replicate the Hightail but I'm happy with the results got from using Goldings.

I was given a can of Coopers Real Ale the other day and already have 1kg of LDM and 1kg of Coopers brewing sugar lying around.....should I just go for it?
Ikg of LDM seems alot,maybe half that is better?...

any advice would be helpful,thanks

+1 on the Real Ale and 1kg LDM.

The Real Ale is a great starting point for experimenting with a few different styles. I find it's a nicely flexible kit that you can easily add quite a variety of hops to to take it in different directions, and the end result is good. I've used Hallertau, Cascade, Amarillo, Goldings and Fuggles (no, not all at the same time!) with various additions of specialty grains and/or different malt extracts to tweak the beer. It's one of the best kits, in my humble opinion, for anyone new to brewing to play around with.

Thanks rwh...point taken,making a cuppa now :)
So I'll ditch the brewing sugar and use 1kg of ldm instead..
and Lachy..yeah I was think of adding cascades finishing hops.
I live on an island so its not always possible to get to hbs,which makes it hard when I am after some quick advice..

I've been to one of your local HBS in Townsville and I'm not sure you would get very good advice there anyway.

The real ale has a reasonable high bitterness at around 38 IBU which means it can handle 1kg of ldm easily. If you are concerned you could always boil some hops with some of your malt to increase the bitterness.

Where are you getting your hops from?

earl....the misses travels to Mackay alot for work so she picks up what I need from the hbs there ("THE KEG")

I get to Mackay a bit more than Townsville, and pop into the Keg every so often. I'm not sure their knowledge on beer and yeasts etc is that extensive either. I will get kits and the odd piece of equipment there, but get spec malts, hops and yeast from Ross at Craftbrewer, and advice and knowledge from here.

Ive just tried a few bottles of the CRA that I bottled only 3 weeks ago.....Im stoked with it! and I can see how this kit is a great base to work with.
THE BEST BEER IVE HAD THIS MORNING!!! :lol:

Yeah, I also spent last night knocking back a few longnecks of Coopers Real Ale that I bottled three weeks ago.

Considering it was just a rushed job (kit & kilo) thrown together with whatever fermentables were lying around, it's come up fairly well. Probably needs another week or two in the bottle before everything smooths out, but obviously Real Ale is a fairly resilient base.

I'd like to see what can be achieved using it and some quality fermentables, hops, etc.

Having been inspired by this thread, I put a "real ale" brew into fermenter on the weekend:

1x Coopers Real Ale tin
1kg liquid light malt
200g Crystal (steeped in 3l of water slowly brought to about 70 degrees over 20mins)
25g Goldings pellets (15g at 20min boil, 10g at flameout)

Put in a Safale s-04 and fermenting at 18-19 degrees

Am still tossing up whether to add another 10g of goldings into fermenter for some (wet) dry-hopping once FG has settled. Any thoughts?

Perhaps someone with a calculator (and more experience than me...!) can assist - the OG was 1.038. Is this a little on the low side?
