I dont think ill bother cooling till im doing larger boils.
Even if im tipping 4l hot, on a 23l brew thats only 17% dont think will really make a difference. I have not had any cardboard like flavors it aint broke so i aint fixing it.

If you go to http://www.basicbrewing.com there is a podcast which discusses an experiment they did with hot side aeration.

It seems that you really have to go out of your way to make it happen, so if you minimise it as much as possible, I wouldnt be concerned.

You could always do the experiment yourslef, just aerate it a bit after boiling, and see if you get any off flavours.

off topic but basicbrewing.com podcasts are great. Thats where i learnt how to use bleach properly. FYI a general rule 2ml of bleach + 2ml of vinegar per litre of water for a good rinse free sanitizer, i tasted some cannot taste bleach at all smells like swimming pool water.

That's great to know Squirt! Backs up my logic. Any of our gurus see any problems with this procedure? :roll:

Anna,

When I still did kits / extract brews, I used to freeze an icecream container or two of water.
I added the ice to my pot post boil, and it certainly helped to cool it down very quickly, enabling me to pitch my yeast sooner.
It worked fine for me, no problems.

Obviously, just be sure that the water you use for making the ice is boiled then cooled before freezing, and make sure your ice cream container etc is sanitised, the fridge isnt a bug friendly place.

I used to do this as well, and with good sanitation, never had a problem.

Can't see a good reason to boil the water prior to freezing, I'm going to top up the fermenter with water straight from the tap anyway.
Point taken about sanitising container though. I use ice cream containers with lids on for my esky-ice production, so I'll aquire another for making brew-ice.

Hi Planner,

I am bit fussy on the water cleanliness side, as i use rainwater a lot, but if you had tap water thats been chlorinated, I guess thats not an issue.

I also use a non rinse sanitiser (Starsan) for the same reason, no point sanitising and then rinsing with rainwater which may have bugs in it.

Yeah, we're on chlorinated tap water. Years ago (pre HB'ing) we were out of town and using tank water, I would definately have boiled that prior to brewing, especially with the state the tanks were in, when we moved in.
