Off to brewmaster or Kmart for the coopers pet bottles, x2 boxes of stubbies i believe they are called?

Stubbies are the little bottles (375mL) and longnecks are the big bottles (750mL) that you can get commercial beer in. The Coopers bottles aren't quite a whole longneck, but they're close enough.

Seems to me that the plastic barrels would be OK to produce a "real ale" type of beer with low carbonation, but not much good if you're looking to do something with a few more bubbles.
