Snowy Mountains Crackenback Pale Ale

I was thinking of making something similar to a snowy mountain crackenback pale ale.

Here is the info from the brewery,

Their info
ABV 4.9%
Bitterness 30 BU
Bittering Hop Chinook
Aroma Hops Amarillo & Cascade
Malts Two-Row Pale & Crystal
OG 11.75 Plato

I'd like some suggestions re: how to get something that may replicate this style.

If I was to start with a Coopers Pale Ale kit, add a kilo of LME and then go with some hops:

Chinook 60 mins
Amarillo 30 mins
Cascade flameout

How much of each hops would I need to get it around the 30 IBU's? (should I leave out the kit and make it all extract?)
When using some online calculators, my IBU's are through the roof, I think I'm putting wrong numbers in....
Any suggestions? :shock:

Beersmith is good,if you can do a full boil you should try an AG! not that hard to do :wink:

Id say chinook(majority of IBUs)60min amarillo 20min cascade flameout. Id wait for the more experienced brewers to reply cheers

2x 1.5 kilo tins of LLME
500g LDME

For hopping, in a full 26L boil add the following:

10g Chinook @ 60 min
15g Amarillo @ 20 min
15g Cascade @ 20 min
10g Amarillo Dry Hopped in Secondary
10g Cascade Dry Hopped in Secondary

We need a drooling icon Oliver! MMmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. 3 of my fave hops combined in the one beverage.

I know Doc, if I had any Amarillo left I would be making it right now! Maybe I could sub in some D-Saaz and NS for the Amarillo and use Chinook and Cascade as well... hmmm... :lol:

Oh wait, I just remembered that I ordered Amarillo from HBW when they had the $5 hop sale on (actually looks like it is still running, $25 for 4x 100g packs of hops including post to anywhere in Aus)! My hops should be here tomorrow ;)

Ok, now my only problem is that now I have a partial mash out of the way, I want to make them all partials!!!
I fear that I may have now crossed over to the dark side. :twisted:

To do this would I just replace a kg of LME with 1.33kg malt grain?

(I'm using the ratio as follows, do you think this is right? :? )

Yeah...that'd work, or better still, grab some recipe software and let it work it all out for you. In the meantime, you can use the Beer Recipator to work out some basic recipe info...

Why use the following
2x 1.5 kilo tins of LLME
500g LDME
Why not just dry or just liquid?
Also in a 4 litre boil with 500gms of ldme, would the hop schedule be the same?

The majority is liquid because I feel that it produces a better beer. The 500g LDME is an acceptable amount of dry malt IMHO and helps make up the target gravity.

I would recommend you do a full boil,it will give a far superior result. But if you let us know the largest boil you are able to do we can calculate the hop additions for you.

Surely it would not be hard to find a 35-40L stockpot in Newcastle for a decent price? I think there are a few people down that way on AHB that may be able to help you out.

That is strange...what I typed (but didn't appear for whatever reason):

Would love to put down a Crackenback, but only have a pot large enough for a 12L boil...how does this affect hop additions?

I would halve the recipe and do the boil twice...

Failing that, halve the recipe and ferment a half batch... ;)
