I bought a copy of comleat distiller after building one from plans i got off the net. Lots of good reading even if some of the science goes a little over my head. Next generation already in the pipeline.

If you want a controller on the cheap and are a little handy try the jaycar coolmaster for $39.
I recently built one with minimal electronics experience. Works a treat but the adjustment conrol is a little fiddly.

Like i said if you do it right.
If you get greedy you end up with all the cogeners (smelly foul tasting part)
they do keep some of these when making real whiskeys etc which is why it takes years in thickly charred barrels to taste any good.

well take it from me some of the essences are good some mediocre and some crap. Bit like everything i suppose. Best thing about making your own is its virtually hangover proof if you do it right.

AG vs extract

Having never tried or thought of trying an AG until discovering these forum thingies i was wondering if,

a) there is much cost difference between the two to make a similar style

b) is there a significant improvement between say an all extract , partial or AG

I guess the hygiene is a given and i must say i hate the chlorine too, i filter and boil all my water. On the temp control note i just finished building a Jaycar coolmaster for a chest freezer $39.00 seems to work a treat. Cheaper than a wine fridge. I like the airstone idea.

Not to mention distilling your own water takes a lot of energy for the volumes required for brewing beer. I just use a 1 micron filter then boil. My water taste like crap cant drink it without the filter.

I must add the only reason i take a reading is to samble my brews along the way. Havent run outa beer doing this yet always enough for the keg and less to bottle.
