Re: Ginger Beer - boil?

Certainly drinkable, but room for improvement. The problem is hard to describe, especially considering it was so long ago, but I suppose you could say it tasted a bit dirty instead of a nice sharp and crisp after taste. I blame the yeast, might use US05 next time.
Unfortunately I have been busy over ...

What are you brewing?

Oliver, this cider sounds similar to something floating around in my mind. Please let me know how it goes in regards to the amount of frozen fruit.

Cheers

Re: Bitter flavor in my Milk Stout after Keg Conditioning

Hey Tim :D
I have heard hops can cause a bitter taste, but I assume you mean something else (unless you want to try a hopless beer).

I'm not too sure, but the guys here may be able to be of a little more help if you could post the recipe and describe the taste a little more.
Also, what ...

Saison style first go

No but I won't rule it out in the near future. How much coriander did you use?
What kind of beer is it similar to?

Forum now on smartphones

I'm using the official app on an iPad and liking it, for anyone skeptical but considering.

Though to be honest, the iPad is big enough that the normal safari version is fine, though it was cheap enough at a few dollars that I don't feel ripped off.
I can see how it would be convenient on a small ...

Cider

I opened all the bottles and added a few mils of juice, as much as would fit in the top of the bottle. A few weeks later and they are much better. I have just opened a bottle, still not good, but drinkable. I'm happy enough with it now

Re: Red Ale Recipes?

Yumm, Fat Yak.
Would upping the hop additions there cause any taste issues? I've of late come to love an IPA, so a more better Fat Yak might suit me well.

Re: Rrecirculating ice water through plate-chiller

I'm no expert but..
Using this calculator: http://www.onlineconversion.com/mixing_water.htm
And 3 fields

I guessed 5000g (5kg) ice @0C, 40000g (40L) water @0C, and 20000g (20L) water (wort) @90C
This would give a temp balance of 25.5C
Though the more water and ice the better.

Obviously this ...

Re: Cider

Yeah, its not too bad with a fair bit of juice, but sort of defeats the purpose. Next time I will try a stronger fruit like raspberries or something, and without added water. Also more lactose, or possibly a cider kit.. Are they any good?

But the way, I boiled them, threw then in the blender, then ...

Re: Cider

its not a strong smell, its quite bland, just not very nice. I boiled the strawberries for at least 5 mins for that reason, not enough?

Re: Cider

1049 down to 1003, had been there a few days before adding finings, and sat longer again before bottling. So yes, finished.
Yeast was the "ginger beer yeast" from craftbrewer (https://www.craftbrewer.com.au/shop/details.asp?PID=975). Very cheap, probably caused the bad smell.

I know I can't fix ...

Re: Cider

I decided to make a cider from about 9L juice, I think 1/2kg of caster sugar, 1.25kg strawberries (did nothing) and water to a total 15L.

Problem is, its finished now and tasted terrible, or rather, doesn't taste. Its extremely flavorless (just an aftertaste that reminds me of fermentation, yeasty ...

Re: Earle's Stone & Wood recipe

I like putting on a second easy batch with each brew, as its easier to get two done fermenting and bottled at once. This sounds like a perfect candidate, mind describing the flavour?

EDIT:
Noticed the wonderful fruity aroma as soon as I cracked it. I could have left it under my nose all night ...

Re: New to Home Brewing

Note that there are definitely some homebrew shops that are better than others so make sure to read as much as you can on the art, as well as just following advice from a bloke in a shop blindly.

I learnt that one fairly soon.

There are heaps of options, depending how much you want to spend ...

Re: Secondary fermentation: "cubitainer?"

Are they just plastic cubes of a softer plastic than HDPE? Do you have a link?
I have myself been considering transferring from primary to a cube, mainly so I can chill it down to a few degrees and easily fit it in the fridge, so it settles better.

You would have to ensure fermentation has ...
