Re: Interesting Flavours

Yes, to confirm, when I went flavour shopping today I actually saw Grappa flavour. Just as I guessed, it is a Prestige brand essence in the little glass bottles with gold lids. Didn't see any Pisco though sorry.

Re: Interesting Flavours

Never tried either of those two spirits, but I have found that people in home brew shops can point you in the right direction if you ask. I walked in and asked for Bundy, Jager, Turkey, all sorts of stuff and the guy basically said "right, you'll need this, this and this" and it was spot on, if not ...

Re: Can't maintain temperature during distillation.

Sweet, thanks so much for the heads up on the still.
Admittedly we only bought that one because it seemed cheap and we didn't want to shell out too much on a hobby we didn't know if we'd stick with. It doesn't surprise me that it's not much chop - I did have my suspicions.
Now we love stilling ...

Re: Can't maintain temperature during distillation.

Thank you so much guys!
I didn't even twig to the water pressure/hose length situation, but I really think that could be what it is. As well as doing it inside so the wind wasn't a factor. So we'll keep doing what we're doing.
For the record, the thermometer sits at the very top of the column ...

Re: Can't maintain temperature during distillation.

I think we may have somewhat fixed the problem. So many variables though, it's hard to tell.

Today was rainy, so we had to set the boiler up inside the shed. This meant we had to use a longer length of hose between the tap and the head, and also we were on concrete instead of pavers. The night ...

Can't maintain temperature during distillation.

Hi,
Been having lots of fun with making spirits, but we can't ever seem to maintain the temperature of our unit between 79-84 degrees C, which we were told is the best range for the one we've got.

It's all well and good, but because we're not getting much over 45% alcohol out of the still, we're ...

Re: Yellow distillate? What did I do?

Problems solved by running it through again. The following is a list of things that were wrong with what we were doing:
1. steel wool has to get shoved up inside the still head. It wasn't shoved up far enough.
2. The thermometer was stuck in too far.
3. The thermometer is also bloody close to ...

Yellow distillate? What did I do?

Set up our first run today.
Started off great but went downhill pretty quick! The methanol and first few mls of ethanol we collected were clear and smelled right, but then we had some problems with keeping the temperature stable and everything from then on came out cloudy or yellow, and only went ...

Am I on the right track?

Hi, I have about 60 million questions!

(Fully aware of the legalities, so we can safely assume that the following is a fictional story.)

Looking to start up a reflux still with a mate. He's used to brewing beers and ciders, but has some gear we can use. We've been doing stacks of research but I've ...
